Unusual stem

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I'm not sure which brug this is but the stem is odd looking. It looks almost like pull apart licorice. about half way up the main stem, it looks like someone took a hammer to it and flattened it. there is no roundness to the stem at all. before it y'd the whole stem looked the right side. it appears to be growing well, is healthy looking and no sign of disease.
any idea what caused this? i've never seen anything like it

Jen,
I had a few do the same thing a couple of years ago....didn't seem to effect the plant at all.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Jen, I don't know why it happens either, but I had a Justicia that did this earlier this spring. I tried to root it, but it wouldn't and they root very easily most of the time.

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

I had a brug stem like this last year, and I tried to root it when fall cut-back time came. It wouldn't root, and it was a Frosty Pink, which normally ALWAYS roots.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Thats bizarre! :-)

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I have had a few do this also never tried to root them

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

My hardy hibiscus had the same thick, flat stems, I was trying to root some for trades, didn't root, had to go cut smaller round stem to root. Thought it might be the hot dry weather here this year.
