Is it ready????????

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Went out and checked the Isabella pods tonight. The seed pod has turned yellow almost overnight. Whatcha all think? Is it ready to pick or should I wait a little longer? Hate to put a cut in it to check as I'm afraid the earwigs will get inside.

Got them!!!!!!!! Yippeeee! Thanks Arlene and Kyle. My first seeds are a nice medium brown and looking good. Only about 35 seeds in each pod but the pods were small on Isabella. These are an Isabella x Solid Gold cross.

Congratulations Snow!! You did it!! Sometimes just for fun after I cut them off the plant, I'll make a little slit in the hull. Sort of like eating the candy bar with little nibbles, lol.

Congrats snow.

LOL Cala. I've got one more pod on Isabella not quite ready and some really big ones on SG. If there was 35 seeds in these little pods there must be a few hundred in the SG ones. Dr D, Milk N Honey, and JP has pods too. Love to watch those pods grow.

What date did you make the cross??
I looked in the book and couldn't see anywhere the gestation period for a bouncing baby brug seed.

can't wait to see what those crosses bring!

Liz, that's funny. They seem to have matured much faster this spring than the ones I did late last summer. I still have a JP pod(actually 2) that are still not ready, I think they've been on there at least 8 months.

Liz, I just picked my insignis gold x insignis pink pod, has 200 seeds in it. I pollinated in mid March. 4 months for that pod. Some are faster than others, I think.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Liz, I pollinated it on 4/9. I pollinated SG about the same time but those big pods aren't near ready yet.

as far as I can see, the book has a set date for sanguineas. 8 months. Are all the rest dependent on the season? Or the conditions in the GH? 3 months, 4??

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Liz, I did pollinate these in the GH and planted them outside if memory serves me about the first of June.Something else I'm curious about is the size of the pods.I pollinated two flowers on SG with Isabella pollen and two flowers with EP pollen. The SG x Isabella pods are huge. The SG x EP pods are half the size.I wonder if who the pollen donor is affects the size of the pods.
Isabella x SG pods were very small compared to the SG x Isabella. So does this mean that SG produces big seed pods and Isabella produces small ones? The mystery of Brugs. LOL

SnowHermit,
All I can say is that most of my hybrids produce a certain type and size of seedpod the majority of the time. Or in other words, most all of my seedpods from a given tree will look very similar in respect to texture...velvety, wrinkled, lined, or smooth,....shape, long and skinny, medium to fat, fat and roundish, etc...etc....depending on the tree they were picked from. I have heard though from other hybridizers that the pollen donor will change the shape of the seedpod to some extent.
