Family: Gesneriaceae
Genus: Sinningia
Species Sellovii
(Sinningia Sellovii)
Very nice ! Do you plant your sinigia sellovii in the garden ?
How do you call her ?
Hi adinamiti, yes I plant her in the garden, she dies dies each winter and returns in the early spring. She is a hardy gloxinia.
Thank you for answering me. That's very interesting. I also have some gloxinias and I let them die during winter. I keep them in pots inside the apartament. This winter was the first for my sinnigia and because I didn't know that it was a gloxinia, I watered it everyday. The mother-plant didn't grow anymore but, in march, appeared some new growths.
Finally, I cut the mother-plant and now I have 4 new plants.
How cold does it get there in the winter? Fortunately, I can leave mine outside all year. This plant is fastly becoming one of my favorites and it is very easy to propagate!
In Romania we have cold winters, with temperatures below zero. I keep all my plants inside and take them outside in spring when it's getting warmer. In the garden we have mostly perennial plants. I plant the annuals every year from seeds.
Do you have any pictures of your plants? I would like to see them if you do. What are your favorites?
I have many pictures with my plants, but they are not scanned for the computer. As soon as I do this, I'll sent them to you.
My favourite is poinsettia.
Really! Do you have a lot of them? Are there many different kinds? I only know of 3 kinds and I I have the normal Christmas one that is red. Mine are doing ok but I leae them in the yard so they die in the winter and usually come back to life. If we have a really cold winter, they will not survive.
I had 5 this winter, but, as I cut them, I have now 5 more because I put the cuts in a pot. Mine are also red. I don't have other colours. They were full of coloured leaves(bracts) and stayed like this till april. I keep them in a balcony which has windows and it's warm for the plants in the winter.
Sounds great that you can make more! We have the white ones here around Christmas and a curly leaved one too. I use to have those but lost them in the winter.
What else do you grow?
I have many plants : violets, begonias, fucsia, pelargonium all kinds, colocasia, hibiscus, kalanchoe all colours, aloe, crasula, some kinds of cactus, hoya, impatiens. I like to propagate them, to see them grow. I also take care of our block's garden and I sewed a few plants : mirabilis, spotted balsmina, petunias, dawn flowers.I sewed them in pots and then I'll replant them in the garden. What plants do you have ?
That sounds like a great mix of flowers...how long does your growing season last?
I have many plants, lots of tropicals (I am in zone 8b) but we have some cold in the winter so I do not have ones that cannot tolerate a freeze and come back.
I will send you pictures soon that will show what I have, too much to list. Some are blooming now but most are just starting to grow good due to lack of rain here.
Our growing season lasts from march till september. After that, the annual plants in the garden die, but I pick the seeds and sew them next spring. I have some house plants which have the growing season in winter, like kalanchoe. I'll also sent you pictures as soon as I can.
Good. We finally had a little rain so now things are starting to look better. I have a few lilies blooming and also pineapple sage, cigar plant, brugmansia, a few hibiscus, butterfly weed, butterfly bush, and a few annuals are blooming too. I am doing some moving and making paths so haven't spent much time with the plants so far. Just not enough hours in the day or strength in the muscles.
You speak very good English, are you originaly from Romania?
Thanks, you're very kind. I'm born in Romania, 43 years ago, but I like very much the English language and I've learned it since I was 10. I've always wanted to become an English teacher. Unfortunately, I followed another path, but I've allways improved my English by reading books in English and by seeing many movies.
You have some unusual plants (for me). Can I find them on this site ?
Do you have a great garden with many paths ?
Hello,
Keep on reading, it is working! You can find plants by searchng Dave's plants database, look on the right side and scroll down to click on the database and then you can search for plants.
I have paths in my back yard and am making paths in the front. My yard is not pretty, it is messy but has lots of plants. My goal is to have NO GRASS. I hate to cut and take care of a lawn so I am not going to have one!
I looked up Bucharest on the internet, how far are you from Istanbul? Have you ever been? I want very much to go there, where east meets west.
Hello to you too ! I think your garden must be beautiful with many flowers. I like gras, but I also like flowers, so I think it's nice to have a lawn with "islands" of flowers. These days I've planted a lots of balsamineas and petunias in our garden. It rained a lot and all the plants are well growned.
Turkey is one of Romania's neighbours. It lies on the other side of the Black Sea, which is not very large. From Bucharest to Istanbul are about 700 km. I've never been there, but I heard it's a beautiful country.
It's nice to "talk" to you like this !
I will email you to continue the conversation, it is very interesting to learn about other countries. If I could afford it I would travel the world!
