Common name: Cottage Pink
Family: Caryophyllaceae
Genus: Dianthus
Species plumarius
Crimson, We grow dianthus up here in Southcentral Alaska. I have one dianthus that has been grown in this town for the last 15 or 20 years, but I haven't been able to identify it. I wondered if it might be a cottage pink, but the foliage is a silvery green with very thin spikey leaves. It grows like a mat. The flowers are either white or light pink with a reddish circle around the center. Your cottage pinks seem to have a different foliage. What do you think?
I'm not sure... I have two different dianthus growing together under the label of "Cottage Pinks", I think one may be Maiden's Pinks (Dianthus deltoides) since they have two different shades of green foliage. Both are mat forming and spread easily.
Most of my deltoides are are quite low growing with tiny dark leaves. However, the pinks with the silvery green foliage are much bushier and the leaves are long and lancelike. Guess I'll keep looking for the name whenever I see something that looks like them.
