bloom in zone 5? My leaves keep getting very tall and more to them but no signs of buds yet.

Any time now..if you start them indoors about 8 weeks early you will get blooms in Early June in Zone 5. :-)
Tammy, I am in zone 6/7, and there are NO signs of blooms yet, but the cannas are in full sun, watered, fertilized, and VERY tall...
Mine qare just starting to bloom..some still a long way off..bad year for cannas obviously.Some years are good others bad..this seems like a bad year.
It's a wonderful year for mine!! I started some like the Intrigue, Tropicanna, and Futurity's inside in March. Planted out in April, and according to the species they have been blooming since the end of May, and should continue to bloom until frost.
