Try some of these ingredients sprayed on grasshoppers for killing these armor plated pests. Often it will take a mixture of some of the ingredients to do the best job.
1. household ammonia-4 cups to a gallon of water sprayed directly on the 'hoppers.
2. Soak torn up leaves of rhubarb and Jimson weed in just enough water to cover the leaves. for about 2 days. Strain off the water and spray it on the 'hoppers . Best if mixed with the ammonia solution.
3. Hot pepper oil. Cut up some really hot peppers litke Serranos or Habanaros and put them in just enough cooking oil to cover them. Heat the oil/pepper solution to almost boiling then cool and let set for a couple days. Strain off oil, mix 1 cup of it with a gallon of water and a couple tablespoons of household ammonia or a teaspoon of dish washing liquid. Spray on 'hoppers. This is about the best mixture as it cuts away the protective coat on the 'hoppers and then burns them to death. Some of the rhubarb or Jimson weed solution will help to speed up & insure death.
If you want to, you can use the hot pepper oil mixture straight. This will plug up the pores on the 'hoppers and burn them badly too.
I hope this helps all of you. I still like chickens for clean control of insects. Sometimes having a really tame pet hen who will follow you from garden to garden and happily eat bugs while you work is of great value and help. Silkies work well for this.
