Canna 'canna seeds' (canna seeds)

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

This selection of canna seed shows their diversity. To sow, use a small tri-file to score the hard outer coat just until you see the white below. Start seeds off in a soak of 1" depth hot to the hand water. Leave seeds in a warm place changing water often to not go bad. In a little while you will see a small white sprout peaking thru. Place sprouted seed in a jiffy pot or vermiculite. In a few days you will see a new little plant. Establish in individual pots before setting out. Most canna started from seed in spring will bloom before frost. Canna seed in warm climates will many times sprout where they fall.

Common name: Canna 'canna seeds'
Family: cannaceae

Abutilon, what's a tri-file? I tried to use a knife and cutlery scissors, and am about to go for the darn hammer soon; can't get a knick in the darn seed to save my life!

I think she means those 3-sided metal files. Have you tried fingernail or toenail clippers? I don't know about canna seeds but I use them for lots of seeds that need the seed coat cracked.

Yes, Poppysue ..that is it.
A three sided file about the size of a pencil.
Works very well for hard coat seeds.
Available for little $$ at the hardware section.

someone already told me to use coarse sand paper...don't know if it worked...will find out soon enough, but my neighbors have lots more seeds!! hahaha!!!

Yes, coarse sand paper will work fine, too.
Just be careful not to 'sand' your fingertips.
Also, you can'hold the seed with a pliers while sanding to save your fingers.

oooohhh...now ya tell me. i don't think i got the seeds, just my nails. in any case, i forgot they were soaking and left for nebraska. i'm gonna plant them and see what happens.

I use nail clippers and nick the seed in a few spots.. soak over night, then plant.. Saves the fingers...
