I have ever grown. I started these just a a 'trying', sowed them to a pot where was nothing growing. They sprouted and when I had been away they had really come much taller and stronger. They are outside now. Should I plant these to ground? I got the seeds from Wingnut :D
My first Daturas
Evert... some of the datura i sowed in Spring are now growing nicely. go ahead and plant them on the ground. the ones i have growing a now 4' x 4', just to give u an idea how big they get to be. mostly got buds on them. good luck :)!
Cool, Evert! Which ones are those?
These are the white ones, you had labelled them as Datura metel (?) if I remember right.
Oh! I think those are the ones that get quite large. I'm not sure about the latin, either, now that I've looked at more and more Daturas. If someone else from this forum tells you it's something else, I'd lean towards believing them. ;)
BTW, those sure look nice and healthy! Good job, Evert.
Evert, it looks just great! :-D It is D. inoxia and will usually get to 1m + high. When the flowers come, don`t forget to put your nose into it. D. inoxia smells great.
Some botanical sources has mislabeled his plant D. metel. Linnč was the first to make this mistake. The rest of the mis-naming stem from botanists citing Linnč`s descriptions.
In many botanical papers one can read, that D. metel grows overly in many parts of India lol However, this should be corrected to D. inoxia grows overly in India. Both the real D. metel and D. inoxia are represented in this Country, but D. metel are not so frequently encountered as D. inoxia.
A quick-guide to distinguis between these two is:
D. metel has sub-glabrous (almost hairless) branches; D. inoxia has pubescent branches and the pubescence vary from velutinose (velvety) to long, close pubescence (like B. sanguinea).
Well, there ya' go, Evert! Thanks, Tonny! I sat in front of my computer monitor until my eyes crossed and thought I'd come up with the right name. Your explanation of the confusion sure makes me feel better about getting it wrong. :)
Thank you for making the name clearer Tonny. Now I am wondering, it Datura metel same as D. meteloides? Do these like sunny and dry place or is half-shady place ok? (not dry)
Tonny,
Is there a website you know of that shows clearly the differences in datura varieties? I am also very confused. I have always grown one variety, a single white bloom on rather compact plants, only 12-18" or so. This year I traded for a lot of different datura seed. However, I suspect some are duplicates under different names. I love datura and supposedly have 8 different varieties growing, but want to educate myself a bit about them. Any resources would be helpful. Thanks!
I was researching one of my daturas, a Datura tatula and came across this site that has pictures of each of the different kinds of daturas.
I thought you might want to see pictures also.
