I'm so upset.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yesterday during the late afternoon, I was taking one of my walks around the flowers when I noticed something wrong with my Species (might be Candida, was from Eric). It looked all wilted. Moisture was there. I babied this thing all winter and kept it away from the other brugs because I suspected it might be virused or diseased. However, this spring it came out of it and was looking great. Had buds on it even. This morning, it was totally limp. I dug it out and tossed it to ensure that whatever the problem was, it wouldn't get to the others, I hope. Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened? The leaves looked healthy and when I dug it up, the roots were nice, but there was a hole in the base of the cutting wood that looked like it could have some kind of borer in it. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Brugie,

cut the root part off and try rooting it again. it may just have had the energy sucked out of it by a borer.

Oh, that is too bad. I am sorry Shirley!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Shirley, I have one of Eric's Species too and although it is growing slow it seems to be fine so I would probably think that maybe a borer got into the main stalk. Can't say for sure. That's really too bad after you babied it all winter. If you want another one I'll be happy to send you one in the fall.

(Zone 6a)

Take a tip cutting and put it in a cup of water and set it in the shade outside. I did that to a few, and they all survived and then rooted when put in potting soil outside.

My C. Species from Eric looked diseased, and I gave it away early on.....raising a C. Double White now.

Brugie, hate to hear that. That is disappointing.

Snow, Arlene said one time that she thought he had Candida instead of Species, so I'm pretty well covered there. My friend Renee has Species from Logees and she is rooting one for me. I just wondered if anyone had ever had a borer get in a plant. This would be a first for me and I'm just pretty sure that is what happened.

Owen, I tossed it this morning. A permanent toss. Didn't want anything to get to my other brugs, so don't think the ashes would root. :-)

Thanks for the sympathy. ;-) It is really hard for most of us to lose a brug we have babied for a long time. To make my day better though, I found four tiny buds on Culebra. Sure brought a smile to my face.

i doubt it was a virus, i sure wish vicky had never started that stuff. i have 3 candidas from eric, one's been blooming for a while and the others have flowers ready to open. stuff does eat them, i remember a story about a rat chewing a hole in a large stem.
Owen, if you got a C double white you probably got the same thing eric had. i would have done like snow said, cut it back to the ground to see what happened. then again, when you have as many brugs as we do, sometimes it's a relief to pitch one. i am looking for homes for 50 or so, hope to unload by this weekend.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I've had a couple do that too. I first strip the leaves to see if that helps. It usually gives the plant a chance to recover. If not, I cut it off at the ground and let it regrow. I will check next time for borers. I thought maybe the voles had run under the roots or something.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Sorry to hear about that Shirley,I have had borers, but never in the brugs....gunna have to watch for that!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Arlene, I don't think it was virused either. Think it was starved for sunshine while it was in the house. Once it was outside it looked great. I have other Candida doubles so it won't be missed that much. Would just have liked to had it grow and keep Eric's name on it.

Cala, if this ever happens again, I'm going to try what you suggest. I should have cut the stalk open to see if I could find the borer. I'm just pretty sure that is what the problem was with it. Oh well, too late to worry about it. Just hope it doesn't show up someplace again. Usually if there is one borer, there will be more. Might have to soak them with Cygon.

Arlene............are you looking to give away any cuttings or small plants that can go thru the mail......she says hopefully?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Brugie, Virus infection looks complete different. It could be, that the plant wasnt not enough adjusted to outside (I dont know, how long it has been in your path) or a fungus.
If it was a borer, check, if the complete stem is hollow.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Yes, Arlene, ditto what Kell said. I have lots of room. Wish I lived closer to you. Maybe I could talk DH into a little trip.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Kell and gingerlily, they are mostly pinks --- insignis, suavolens, isabella, some dr suess and most are too big to go through the mail. i'm expecting several people this weekend, will see what's left. will have to do an inventory on what i could do cuttings on, but most of my newer and exotic brugs won't be able to be cut on for a while. check with me sunday/monday, will see what's left and what i can do cuttings on. if you are interested in these pinks let me know, somehow i rooted a bunch of them.

gingerlily, you are about 3 hours away? you are most welcome to come, i'm sure i can find cuttings of a lot not in pots. also my friend is going to have a trade in september, got to get her to pick a date, irish and katie came last fall, the ginger guy dave from tally, amaryllisgal who lives less than 10 minutes from me, and a generally nice group of people!!

Monika, I'm sure the plant didn't have a virus. Very healthy and has been outside for about two months, planted in the ground. I got rid of the plant, so I can't check the stem, but there was a round hole in it about the size of a small pea. Pretty sure I had an unwanted visitor in there. This plant just went from great to total wilt in two days.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Brugie - did it look like an Iris borer hole?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Liz, I don't know one hole from another when it comes to what critters can do. Just a small hole, straight into the wood.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Brugie . . . so sorry to hear about your plant after all that time that you had spent on it. I know that it must be very frustrating but just think about all your other beautiful brugs and other flowers.

Just a note - my email is not working because the provider is down. Can you imagine a major telephone company that provides internet service not being to be able to get their internet completely up after 4 days. I have not responded to any email because of this.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Frannie, tonight I sent mail to a bunch of people and five of them came back. I think there is a lot of trouble out there. I couldn't get to Daves for a long, long time. That really frustrates me. I just figured I wait to hear from you instead of trying and you not getting the mail. Hope you had a great day today.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Brugie . . I will email you whenever it starts working again. Hope DH is doing much better and that the two of you had a wonderful day. Mine was good!
