Barbarian at the gates

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Making a bee-line to the brugs. Just before he got decapitated. When you're 8 inches long you can cover a lot of territory.
Don't enlarge this if you're eating your breakfast LOL

Oh my goodness or I should say on my badness, what kind of slug is that Liz? That is truly gross and can you imagine being slimed by that thing? That competes with the flying rat I saw on here a few weeks ago.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

PS, love your title and so fitting

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Oh my, he is ugly. Hope you don't have too many of those around. At that size, I'm sure he would do a lot of damage and quickly.

These are everywhere on the west coast. These are called banana slugs. The black ones are even uglier. Snakes eat them up real fast.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Oh gosh, I couldn't stand to see the snakes either, Jeanne. Why are they named Banana Slugs? Because of the way they look or are they death on banana plants? Just curious.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Because they taste like bananas Shirley!
Brugcrazy, on the west coast of Canada? They sure are not where I live! thank god!

Kell, when I first moved to the west coast many moons ago and saw these banana slugs I was shocked. I've never seen a slug this big anywhere. I think they're called banana slugs because they look like a banana. I'm sure they have them in Washington State too, maybe Pebbles will jump in and let us know.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Oh my! Guess I'll be happy we just have those two - three in. gray ones.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, we are missing out then!! :-) Knock on wood, I've never seen a slug in my gardens. I think I had some on the hosta last year, but after they got their fill, they quit eating. Couldn't find slug bait at all. Ordered some this year and haven't had to use it. The kids in middle school here would love to have something like the banana slug to disect. I'm afraid I couldn't pick them up or off a plant. Would have to use a pair of pliers. YUCK!!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

This is why I was asking about the exploding ant recipe. Mind you, exploding a few of these guys could get messy.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

So glad we don't have them that big, but I think I've seen some here that were at least 6 inches long all stretched out.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Brugie, I get grossed out just squishing the little skinny slugs we have here. I would have to stop my nightly snail parol if these were waiting for me out in the dark..............
Brugcrazy, what makes you so sure they are not named banana because of how they taste raw??? I think you should try it to make sure I am wrong..... LOL

I never use bait. Water your garden well as late in the day as you dare, then come out at midnight with a flashlight and go to their favorite plants and they are easy pickings! crunch crunch slime slime Of course my yard is size challenged so snail patrol only takes 20 minutes. Brugie yours would take you 2 hours!

Sorry Kell, I'm a vegetarian, no banana slugs for me. LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'd be a vegetarian if I had to taste one of those things. Nasty look critters and I'd almost bet they would taste like leaves. Hey Liz, wonder if Kell would try it and send us the taste test results? :-)

Kelley,
Me and my killer dog do rabbit patrol most nights....we manage to run off 5 or 6 but miss the others that are eating away at my flowers in the back yard. Guess I'll have to add slugs to my patrol too.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

this 8 inch slimey ICK is not stretched out - probably about a foot long at full gallop. LOL. As to the banana part - the ones that live long and prosperous and never see the light of day are a pale yellowy colour. Hence the banana part. The normal slugs in my garden are nowhere near this size as I'm on slug patrol every morning. This is an example of the ones that have escaped me and snuck in from the wilds next door. They make a very satisfying plop when they get tossed in the salt water. Crab bait.
I've heard that Seattle has a slug festival. Can you imagine? People bring slugs from home. LOL

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

a foot long????????? oh yuck, it was bad enough when I thought it was about 6" !!!! nasty nasty, I'd have to move or never go out at night one!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I remember reading about armadillos in Texas gardens. If I saw an armadillo in my garden I'd drop dead on the spot. Period.
After that - slugs became just a nuisance.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hey do you think we thought of a new torture for that show.......what is it called? fear factor? We could make the poor souls lie in a tub naked full of the them........... and then make them bite their heads off.........did you catch the ugly face on that thing?

And Liz, I just realized the sad truth that your slugs live better than I do even if they do not live as long. LOL

Hey Kell, I'm coming to the Bay Area in early October. Would you like me to bring you a few slugs for the BBQ. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What a thought brugcrazy! My DH loves to try new things! I am picturing an ad campaign now like the one for Australia that had Crocodile Dundee putting shrimp on the barbie, but in this ad it is you and Liz popping slugs on the barbie and inviting us all to come to Vancouver! YUM YUM
Would make me want to come visit!

Kelley,
How do you sit long enough to hold down a job....I can see you now jumping all around and getting excited. It's a joy to have you here on Daves....I can always get a good laugh from you. Thanks!!!!

(Zone 6a)

I just now put out a bowl of coffee (caffeine kind) to see if the slugs will slurp it up tonight. Tired of feeding them my beer. lol

Owen

gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

You guys have me laughing out loud in my computer room. My DH probably thinks I've lost it. I have an armadillo that roots in my gardens at night, and I'm still not sure he's worse than that giant slug (that tastes like banana). I put out mothballs. Does anybody have any other ideas?

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i can't believe there is actually a critter i don't have. i've never seen a slug. local trading friend says it's because we've been in drought for so long.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

AH Shucks Glory.............thanks! :))

Arlene, you are in luck! Brugcrazy is exporting them for a small fee!

sorry Marie, I do not even know what an armadillo is and NO......no exporting me one! LOL

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Oh and Arlene - just to keep everything on the up and up so that the slug police will be happy, I'm sure brugcrazy can supply you with a document saying they have been in Canada for at least two years. But for that you have to order the big boys.

Marie,
I believe that Armadillo is after grubs and such in the ground....maybe you might need to get rid of them and then he'll go away and them maybe not. LOL

I too am always laughing while on Daves....one never knows what is going to happen next on the Brug Forum.

Hamilton, Canada

Brugs seem to be a bug/critter magnet!! I've never dealt with so many insects in my life until I started with brugs-fungus gnats, whitefly, slugs, carpenter ants, aphids, and a host of other things. I had my brother dig up all of my brugs except one and I think I'll also have him come back and dig that one up. The new leaves are getting eaten up as fast as they sprout....arrrrrrrrrgh!! My brugs are going to be addicted to Safer Soap!!
