Brug questions.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hi,
Yes, I'm bored. Not enough going on tonight. Everyone must be out working in the flower beds.
This forum needs some more active threads, we missed you guys who went to the Round-up. We can't let Photos have more posts than we do. Don't be shy. Jump right in and say what you think. (Unless you think this was a stupid thread to start) :-)

I'd like to know your answers to these questions:

1. What is your best blooming brug?
2. What brug that you have has the best overall shape without having to prune it?
3. What brug of yours has the best fragrance?
4. If you had to pick just one, which one would you choose to raise and why? Is it your favorite?
5. What will be the next brug you want to add to your collection?
6. Will you compost any of your brugs because you aren't happy with them and which ones would that be?

That should be enough questions.

My answers:
1. Jean Pasco-Dr. Suess--Both bloom most of the summer.
2. Versi. Orange
3. Dr. Suess
4. Versi. Orange...I like all the blooms open at once. I think until I see some of my new ones, that it is my favorite from last year.
5. Pink Candida
6. Yes. There will be several that go this year. I have too many whites and if seedlings bloom white they will be composted.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Ms Brugie, kyle's pink is very candida like, without super velveety leaves. the velveety leaves disappear if given much sun, i have a double white candida about to bloom that doesn't look candida at all any more.
1. from last year i would say Dr Suess. i expect one to take its place this year. Creamsickle has had blooms and buds since it started, no signs of slowing up.
2. my butterfly has a perfect shape (to me), and i have only picked off 1-2 leaves off the bottom, a couple of months ago, so water could get near the stalk. it has tons of leaves on it going all the way down to the ground, covering the ground. would probably be fine without some leaves, but i think the leaves help them get their nutrition. i do have brugs that have lost a lot of lower leaves from yellowing out during our 2 month drought. it had 30% blooms on it about a month ago, and is budding up nicely, i expect tons of blooms in a week or two. the fragrance is too strong for me.
3. the ones you have to put your nice in to smell.
4. don't know
5. none pressing. would like to have aurea rosabelle, ocre and lamour in that order.
6. lots and lots of pinks/suavolens and insignis types. and the white seedlings sure to bloom.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

1. Sunray. Just keeps blooming
2. Dr D
3.Have to pick three here, versi Peach, Sunray, and Solid Gold. All have a wonerful scent.
4.Oh my!! No way can I pick just one.
5.Pink Beauty, L'Amour and Creamsickle are on my most wanted list right now.
6. I have to downsize this fall and I have several dbls and triples of one kind. They will have to go along with any that are not good bloomers, growers etc.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Arlene, can you post a picture of Kyle's Pink? I don't have that one and would like to see it. Thanks.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Ms Brugie, it is Dr Suess X EP, and the color is very like EP.

1. What is your best blooming brug?
It would have to be Whiskers...it must love our heat it blooms all the time.

2. What brug that you have has the best overall shape without having to prune it?
Isabella

3. What brug of yours has the best fragrance?
That would have to be Carol G first then the Aurea Hybrids second.
4. If you had to pick just one, which one would you choose to raise and why?
Cannot pick just one.

5. What will be the next brug you want to add to your collection?
Since I don't know the names of the European ones...I'd have to say any double pink that looks like the Candida Species.

6. Will you compost any of your brugs because you aren't happy with them and which ones would that be?
I have already done some of that but I'm sure some of these plain whites and extra Dr. Suess will have to go.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Glory, still waiting on whiskers to bloom. i will never do cheap fertilizer again!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Arlene, I don't know how I missed those unless that was when I was so upset about Jim's problem. That is a pretty flower. Thanks for posting the links to the pictures. Has anyone posted a picture of Amber Rose in the past?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

will come back with answers when I have more rest, but you should have used your 6 questions to start 6 threads!!!! LOL!! yes, we have to get our posting back up, have to be in top two or I get disappointed.,

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

This is a good thread to start, will be back with my answers later. Right off, I have to say Jean Pasco is my favorite, until I see some of the new ones bloom, dbl. Peach for one, my favorite color and a double yet!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

hibiscus, how does double peach grow for you? i found it obnoxious, slow and not real easy to root. i don't have one now and don't care, curious if i had a fluke. creamsickle otoh grows fast, hasn't quit budding and roots in a heart beat.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Dbl. Peach growing ok, slow. Started cuttings in water, after a month, no roots, just nubs, so planted (2). They are growing, so guess they finally did root. Hope to live long enough to see it bloom.

(Zone 6a)

Have only had three different brugs blossom for me to date.

1. Versicolor Peach
2. Dr. Seuss
3. Versicolor Peach
4. Versicolor Peach.....favorite of 3 so far.
5. Butterfly (with several tied for second place)
6. No

You are right tiG. Single question threads would have produced more posts. Oh well, we will catch up with them again, especially as we all have more brugs blooming.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Best blooming- Candida Yellow from Parks
Shape: Isabella
Fragrance: Candida Yellow
Favorite: J. Pasco
Add to collection: Rothkirch
Compost: none yet!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You are all doing great. I think we would all like to have a Rothkirch. Maybe someday Hibiscus.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hibiscus, did you grow that Candida Yellow from seed? Is it one of the bigger blooms? Is it a true yellow?
thanks

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Bought this plant, yellow, gets darker, from Park Seed Co. was my first brug, along with an Aurea Peach, from them also. It is still one of my favorites for looks and smell, but after three years, I have moved on to some doubles and E. Pink, for good color. P. & Cr. for foliage.

This flower does get some darker on the fourth day. It is still different from DS and SG.Too bad I'm not sure of the name of it. Don't want to use it for pollinating without a name or I'll have mutt plants. LOL

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

but mutts are wonderful, truly american!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

LOL Arlene. Yes they are and not so high strung.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I think I'm going to have to answer later in the season, am just now working on first blossom and have so many that could be best this or that.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Bet my answers will change later too tiG.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Only thing blooming for me is some kind of pretty yellow that I used to think was Charles Grimaldi but probably Dr. Seus, Ecuador pink, and the latest and my favorite, Jessie Noel. This is one more hardy, pretty plant.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

1.What is your best blooming brug? Have a pale yellow and a golden yellow that are non stop bloomers. Slow only slightly in greenhouse during the winter. Also, Milk and Honey and U. Conn Treasures are good continual bloomers.

2. What brug that you have has the best overall shape without having to prune it? Don’t know.

3. What brug of yours has the best fragrance? White suaveolens.

4. If you had to pick just one, which one would you choose to raise and why? Is it your favorite? Pink Beauty, Ecuador Pink, Butterfly, and newest favorite Tropical Sunset.

5. What will be the next brug you want to add to your collection? Other than the elusive double pink, Charleston.

6. Will you compost any of your brugs because you aren't happy with them and which ones would that be? Yes, do not know yet but space requires me to make choices. Although it may not perform great, there may be a characteristic worth saving for hybridizing. Like to watch them grow over long period.
