isn't really from me. I don't know who had me in their book, but if you get an email from me that doesn't have my name in it (after this post) then don't open it. almost positive it's Klez. But my machine is clean.
email from me
yuck
thanks for the heads up
jen
What is Klez?
thanks
it's a virus that goes through your email addressbook and picks a name or names. then it makes it look like I am sending the virus, when it's really from someone else's machine, not mine. The two people that wrote me I can assure you were not in my address book. But just don't want you to open it if you get it, unless it says 'from tiG' cause the virus can't pick that up.
so you do not have to download a file to get it? You just need to open an email??
right. if you don't have virus software already get it now for free. www.grisoft.com
Well, I found a message this morning on my computer that said I sent an infected file to Brugie titled "A Special Nice Game" - - but I did not. Probably eveyone in my address book received it. Her Norton anti-virus program send me the message and it is the Klez virus. I am trying to figure out why my Norton didn't catch it. It really irritates me now that you don't even have to open an exec. file to set a virus loose. I think I will go back to using Netscape Navigator instead of Outlook because I never had any problems with Netscape. It seems like the these people go for trying to infect as many computers as they can and since the majority use Outlook that is what they go after.
if someone gets that email from you, it doesn't mean that you are infected. that's the way Klez works, it makes one person look guilty when it's not you, it got your addy from somewhere else.
I do remember getting one yesterday, but it didn't come in the way your normal mail comes in. I was curious about it and was going to open it when Norton sent their mail saying the attachment had been deleted. Hope someone finds these people some time and puts them away for a while. They can sure make life miserable with their little tricks. I don't find them funny at all. Good luck with the clean out process. I've gone through it once this year and hope I don't have to go through it again.

Brugnanny, if your Norton is uptodate, and you've done a scan, you are more than likely not the culprit. The virus doesn't usually come from the person that's infected, just someone in their address book.

Well, what does the virus do to your computer? Does AOL have any protection? What was in your email from tiG, Joydie1? Is it such that you immediately know you have opened a virus? Woe is me.
one, it wasn't from me. :) it appeared to be from me. go to the Norton site, and look it up, there are a whole list of random names that the email will use as a title. That's why I said if it doesn't say "from tiG" don't open it. from what I've read, all it does is send these emails, but it's been a while since I read up on it.
BrugNanny, I agree, netscape is much better. seems most viruses are made to work on microsoft products, outlook express and word, and i don't use either on my computer.
I don't use outlook, only yahoo mail on the web. even mail that goes to missytig@charter I download onto yahoo.
I have gotten 7 in the last 3 days. My Norton tells me it is a virus and they have quarentined, do I want to delete? Or I have the choice of opening the paperclip, what would you do? Naturally, I deleted it! Have been wondering who's computer is sending it to all the people in their address book.
as long as we all watch out, we'll be okay.
BrugNanny..........look what I just read about it, re: the email you supposedly got from Shirley's computer.
"For example, if your email address is jsmith@anyplace.com, you could receive a message that appears to be from postmaster@anyplace.com, indicating that you attempted to send email and the attempt failed. If this is the false message that is sent by the virus, the attachment includes the virus itself. Of course, such attachments should not be opened."
this is pretty diabolical!
Right, tiG, you don't know for sure whose computer is really sending it out. I have two people who usually send me all kinds of jokes, one after the other. Sometimes I wonder how they keep their computers from getting a virus? I figured it might be either one of them. Thanks for warning us anyway, may not be you.
I just did a full virus scan on mine and it came up clean.
Mine too!
I do a full scan twice a week, but may change that to happen every night while I'm sleeping.
Frannie, I went to my deleted files and all it says is fkeonitz but not @domain. So, I can't tell who it really came from, but I don't think it was you. It has just grabbed your addy from someplace, and then my server caught it and let you know since that is how it is designed to work.
I don't know what you all think about this, but I've received some emails through DG and they have had requests for seeds, etc. Generally from posts back a few months. I mail them back to say yes, and never hear from them again. So, I started checking the list of those subscribed, and these people are never subscribed. This is when the viruses start coming in again. I really think there should be some way to keep those who are not paid from having any kind of access to our email addresses.
very possible Brugie! but one of the people that got one from me was Vickie. I'm thinking this one might have come through the yahoo group, or something similar as they all appear to be brug people. I scan every morning after getting Klez a few months back.
I doubt that we could ever figure out where they originate. Too bad too. Well, then, I'm definitely going in and change the dates for my computer to scan. If I do it at 4 AM, it won't cause any problems with anything else going on. I think I'm going to go to my addy book and delete everyone who I don't email regularly too. I can always find them at Daves or through someone if I need to write later on.

Isn't this so aggravating. I think I am going to schedule mine to check every day also, but there is no way of knowing it a virus gets into your address book. I just don't know how to protect myself any better. I said this earlier - - most all virus are designed for Outlook and Internet Explorer. I used Netscape Navigator for years and changed this last year to IE because I think it surfs the web a little faster. I like Netscape and I am going to reload today and see if there really is a difference in speed. I like using my address book and I don't want to delete the whole thing and that is the only way to stop most of these new viruses.
another little trick you can do is put a adress in your address book that will not work starting with a "A" so its frist and if mail is sent to that address you will get it back and know that you may have a viris
Frannie, just schedule your scan for the middle of the night. update your virus definitions once a week, minimum. and enjoy your brugs:)
Pete I did the same thing, but it was recommended that I use the address name of !000 Email address Worm Alert I have never had one come back so I don't know if it works or not.
tiG................i have an email from you.....is it a real one?? Are you testing me??? LOL You all have me paranoid esp since I disabled McAfee...it was so annoying. So tell me, is it safe to open??
LOL!! it says 'note from tiG'! now, if it has an attachment or something you better holler cause I'm gonna sue AVG. :)You might try it, www.grisoft.com and it's free.

well I hope this is true............ my son finally answered my email and emailed me back from his bedroom a few feet from where I am sitting.
LOL
The difference between AOL/Netscape email browsing and Outlook is where the message is stored and how it is treated. Outlook downloads a copy of the message to your local computer, while AOL/Netscape keep the messages stored online. Also, Outlook's preview pane will trigger and hostile scripts or programs that are embedded in the email, possible infecting a computer just from viewing an email. AOL will not. So, you should be safe.
This is the virus that got into my machine..I am having a terrible time getting it to allow me to use a virus scan program as it is built to defeat the virus programs....... :-(
see the other thread for a couple of suggestions. at least this virus doesn't eat the computer!
Kell, I have AOL and a bug! All new mails are stored on the computer. I open and delete them online just to find them later in my offline Mailbox. I always thougt, by using AOL, I automaticly would use Netscape.
my netscape downloads the mail onto my computer, i have the option, and elected to do so. but i don't use AOL. i also use an older version, had problems with a newer one i tried, lost all my old emails and addresses in the process, went back to a 4 something version.
