Great!! Thanks for posting this picture. Now I kinda know what to expect. I see you have cannas blooming. I'm so jealous. Mine will be another month or more before bloom.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Tig, that is lovely....love yor bloomin cannas too. I'm with brugie, will be at least a month before they bloom.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

my tropicannas are getting ready to bloom, I moved out most of them, but wish I'd left more. it's so hard to know how big a plant will get for sure when you first grow it, and this bed is full of new things.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

tiG ... i was born and raised in the tropics. bananas, cannas and gingers needs plenty of room for their rhyzomes to expand. better warn u now than later.

if ur banana grows and bear pups, u will have difficulty taking some out in due time. sorry to be bearer of bad news :(.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

they won't overwinter here, so I have to take them up anyway. Good for trades I guess huh?? LOL!! thanks for the warning, I'll make sure I have them in plenty of room every year!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

tiG... since u're digging some during the winter time, leave a few on the ground and mulch them. these way u will learn if they will take winter in ur area. banana i use to grow in Los Angeles, Zone 10 i didn't have to do anything. a little experiment could help find out how hardy some of tropicals are in ur area. just a thought.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

good idea!!! thanks

2 heads sometimes is better than one :)!

do get the pups, if there are any, cause the mother plant should be the one that will bear fruit for u next season, if it did not bear this season.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

even if I bring her in? I wonder if our season is long enough to get fruit.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

no, undisturbed from where she is planted.

one year in L.A., Ca. when winter was so bad, the banana tree bore fruit too late. during that cold wintery month, all the green leaves turned black. i was so worried and concerned but could not do anything. to make the long story short, the following year after the winter, the fruits developed to maturity, new set of leaves came thru the plant.

as mentioned before, observe and see how winter will treat ur tropical plants. use common sense as ur guide. i never water the plant during the winter months, except for the rain.

some tropical plant/s do manage to acclimate themselves to their new homes. good luck!!!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Maybe when yopu get you new "greenroom" you can have nanners!! You have mail!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

in researching this for the database, I found out it's hardy to zone 8. well, I'm only one county away from that!!! in a small cold pocket, but I'm going to try it once I have a pup or two for insurance!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I am curious what size is your Banana is?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it's about 5' now, but if you mean the fruit, I believe they are small. I doubt I'll get fruit this year.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I wonder how taste is your banana? I would like to have some plants if you have plenty. I will send out your House plants this saturday.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I don't have extras right now Rose, it will be fall. I'll put you in line, in case I have plenty, k?
thanks

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Tig,I love that one, reminds me of cleopatra canna!Mine are boaring green......

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

tiG ... the pups u can grow indoors. very nice statement it makes growing in a well lite room. i've tried growing some indoors, but was not able to have them grow fruit though cause i have to give it away to one of my aunt.

one thing for sure, although i live in zone 8, it will never have a chance to grow up here cause our winter temperature goes down to 10 degs.

here's a few url for u... http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/banana.html , http://fruitsandnuts.ucdavis.edu/banana1.html , http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/2011/Musa.html , http://newcrop.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/nexus/Musa_spp_nex.html

hope the links helps.

tig,
Did you get any of the Chinese Yellow Banana trees from Earls when we were there in March? The ones I got are doing great.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

yes, but mine isn't growing and neither is the bird of paradise. I know it's my fault, just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
