Matucana is sometimes cited as the original sweet pea. This is certainly incorrect, although the colour combination is very similar. However, the presence of four relatively large flowers on each stem betokens a much more recent origin. In fact, it appears to have developed from a garden escape, probably in the 1920s or 1930s.
