Started last year changing this bed to tropical looking. Added banana, rice plant, coleus, alocasia sinuata, calocasia esculenta, several hostas that were golden or variegated under the taller plants.
Changing back yard to tropical
Well done!! Living where you do that's what I always expected your garden to look like. It's perfect.
Liz,
Thanks, this year I am filling up a 60 by 200 foot lot behind our house, which we purchased (had to tear a house down.) Have added several new beds in that area this year. The dirt is horrible. Dead pan!! Where ever I put plants I have to dig the dirt out and replace with a good quality dirt or put raised beds. I am going broke buying dirt and can't compost fast enough to do what needs to be done. How are those brugs doing in Canada. Have you gotten any great new varieties? I wish they would lighten up on sending plants so we could trade.
Me too - the brugs are doing well - my personal favourite, the sanguineas, are flourishing. I'm trying not to post them as I'm sounding like a one note wonder. But it's where I live. I have a few brugs coming in from Hodnik this week.
Just your use of the word dirt, as opposed to soil, tells me you must be bringing in a lot. And working your behind off.
I tried in vain 3 times to grow sanguineas. They all died--even brought them in to air conditioning and it didn't help. It sounds as though you are doing great with them. Are you going to try to hybridize any?
Do you grow anything except brugs in a big way? Unfortunately, my 3 passions are (in order of compulsions) brugs and gingers tie for first place and alocacasia and calocasias and next. Going to wait until I get what I have in the ground before I dare order anymore from Hodnik. Were you ever able to get any from germany?
Bward
check woth you local Borough(town) officethey may have acomposting program where i live people put there leaves at the edge of the st in the fall and the town comes around and sweeps them up and compostes them i have gotten enouge to fill 2 beds and a few hundred 4 inch pots to take to market and am going back for more
Troy,
Our town folks put leaves(if they are foolish)at the street. If you are fast enough, you can pick them up, but a commercial concern has started picking them up and making compost and selling the compost.
