Big Pots

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

DH bought these for me this week. They are 20 gallon (6900) size. They were about $3 each. He bought me 40 of them. I'm trying to get all the brugs not already in big pots moved up to this size. These are nice heavy pots with a "lip" to make carrying easier.

You're so lucky to be able to buy wholesale.I found a place in Maine that sells them and had a whole list of pots made out only to find when I called they only sold wholesale to businesses. The local greenhouse here ordered some 7 gal. ones for me.

I saw some like that at the greenhouse I go to.They wanted 4 bucks each...but the price probably went up....

wow, wonder if I could get a nursery here to order me some?

i bought 7 gallons, almost $1.50 of them, by the "roll", think there were 40 of them. my friend here is getting ready to order wholesale, said i can go in with her. I love the lip on the ones i got, they are so much sturdier than the 5 gallons i bought, and wider rather than taller.

TiG, if you're coming to the RU, I can bring you a few.

Cala, what is the diamter of those pots? I have my larger brugs in 20 inch pots, says it takes 85 pounds of potting soil. since I mix my own potting medium, I couldn't say, but I know it's a powerful lotta dirt (and peat moss and sand and compost) in those bears. Gives me a hernia to move 'em, that's for sure.

Cala, I would love to buy a few from you, I can't find anything like that down here.
Anna, I'd love to have your soil recipe. I've mixed my own all year, but am always looking to improve.

tiG, I use 2 parts peat moss, 1 part mason sand, and 1 part compost. I usually use 5 gallon pails of stuff, and mix it up on the shop floor and use a scoop shovel. I found that recipe in a container gardening book, I really like that mix.

I use perlite instead of sand, it makes it much lighter. you don't use any lime?

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

No, I spose I should throw in a handful or two??

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, I got my recipe beginnings from the gardenology definition of soilless mix. and the peat needs the lime, right? I just keep thinking that the ratio is too high, so I cut down on it a bit. I have to buy my compost, but it's still cheap that way.
I use two parts peat, 2 parts perlite, 1 part compost and 2 tbls lime per 2 quarts of mix, but that is an awful lot of lime, don't you think?
