Flowering in June out in the New Forest.
Common name: Rhododendron
Family: Ericaceae
Genus: Rhododendron
Species ponticum
Hello Baa, what a beautiful Rhodoendron and my favourite colour. I've never attempted to grow this plant before and I'm going to try my luck this year! We've just built a new home on a raven lot with lots of shade tree's and pines. From the little knowledge I have they like acidic soil, which pines give off?????? Are they hard to get started?

Hi Flowerpot
Rhodos are very easy to get started as long as you have completely lime free soil, some of the hybrids tolerate a more neutral soil but tend to get yellow leaves over time and look sickly. They like a spot in dappled shade too. They prefer shallow planting and form a mat of roots just below the surface, plant them too deeply and they won't take at all. One of the problems with growing a Rhodo in the garden is you can't under plant them as the roots give off a chemical which destroys the competition from other plants.
This particular species is one I wouldn't recommend because it's very invasive and will escape into the wild as the ancestors of this one have done.
I hope that helps :)
