The Ecuadore pink remains one of my favorite plants after growing many others. Although the blooms are short lived, it makes up for it in shape and color of bloom.Only Butterfly comes close in color. Has anyone tried hybridizing using EP?
Still one of my favorite
A gorgeous picture - I think everyone who has it is scrambling to use it after Monika told us how valuable it was in her program.
Barb...I used EP many times in my crosses...I have several pink offspring that came out of those crosses..but likewise many white offspring,When I started breeding this was the first pink brug I could find, so I used it alot. :-)
I used it last year, and lots more so far this year. I accidentaly let some of my big plants wilt though and lost some newly formed pods.
Barb,
I just pollinated an E.Pink with pollen from Golden Lady.
It is also one of my favorites because of the color and shape of the flower and its many blooms. It would be just perfect if the blooms lasted longer. I was thinking that it was the heat where I am at that was causing them to fade more quickly. Glad to know that it is part of their nature.
Would just love to have a EP anyone got any cuttings that need a good home???
Nanny, I think, it must be the heat. At my place, the flowers last about a whole week.
Irish, I will get you a cutting started.
cool thanks
Dr.D and Amber Rose were both created from Dr.Sues x Ecuador pink. Ecuador pink is wonderful to use as a pollen donor in my limited experience.
Eric, what did you use to make Kyle's Pink? I know EP was one of them, arlene's picture was just fabulous.
Monika. . . I think it is probably the heat. My EP is shaded more than half the day but it is 94 degrees F in the shade. I really don't know what is better a longer growing season in warmer regions or the colder shorter growing season regions with the cooler summers.
We've had very high temps the last couple of days and some of mine in the yard have their tongues hanging out. hehehe
I have to run out there and give them a drink every day!
Sometimes, I wished, living in a better climatic region. But seeing on TV, the heavy thunderstorms, damaging these regions, I am glad, that I dont, Nanny. Not every year is good Brugmansia year up here, but still better, as have all plants destroyed by storm or hail. We have problems with lightning damage up here but hail corns are not so big as for instance, where Mme Blin lives.
My one and only EP flower is almost fully open. Gonna save every bit of pollen from it to use on Species and c. Dbl. White.Weather here is cool and windy. Hope that flower hangs on.
Do anyone ever get fluffy pollen from EP?....mine is aways dry....I use it as the Mother plant.
Glory, my blooms on EP had very little and I thought it might be due to the extreme heat. Maybe someone else will comment.
What about crossing Equadore with Golfito?
Use Golfito as the pollen donor?....My Golfito has yet to bloom.
I get some fluffy pollen from EP. It's only ripe for a little while. If you snooze, you might miss it, lol. I lost every single seed pod that was setting on my EP plants, all three of them. What did I do wrong? I used Whiskers and Charles Grimaldi pollen. The pollen was fresh since the other plants were right beside it.
Cala,
I had the same thing happen to my Golden Lady last go round...I bet I pollinated 10-15 flowers using fresh pollen from different Brugs and not a one took. Anyone have any ideas on this?
Pollination works only as long as the stigma stays fertil.
It varies from hybrid to hybrid.
i've been having that problem and feel inept. i only have 2 confirmed pods, critter fertilized out of all the blooms i have had. last year i didn't get any seed pods started til august, am wondering about these hot conditions here. glad to know i am not alone.
Monika,
Is it better to pollinate before the flower opens?
No, I pollinate from the first to second day. But you or arlene have to consider the different climate, during heat periods, early pollination (first day) are very successful.
Thanks so much Monika.
Monika, these were pollinated at all different times, I wanted to see which was best. All the other varieties took, just not EP. I'm also having trouble with Jean Pasco holding the pods.
