Three years from this June, we are planning to make our "Great Escape" from the 'burbs. We're looking to raise a few beef cattle cows and raise up their children for our own meat and maybe a few to sell. Chickens for eggs and entertainment. A few pet goats. Maybe a feeder pig or two. A "higher than deer can jump" fenced in vegie and flower garden. Maybe three horses. A few bee hives. A small woodlot "wild" space. Probably not all at the same time, not all at first. Also, we want an area with good deer hunting and a reasonably long growing season (spoiled by the year-round conditions here in CA). So far, we think we've narrowed it down to (1) not less than 10 acres (preferably +15) and (2) possibly in central to south AR or central to south TN. I'd be interested in any oppions on any of the above. If you have a state you particularly love, I'd be interested in your opinions on that, too.
TIA Karla
PS Although DH & I have never "farmed", per se, we both lived in the country for extended periods of time (before we found each other). He's a diesle mech who is one of those people who "can fix anything he puts his hands on". I'm a computer geek. We'll see how well *I* survive (oh, but I do miss living in rural GA!).
Thanks again for any feedback.
