Some people have cats that are good mousers, but I have two dogs that are good moosers. I posted a thread in the Wildlife forum concerning my run-in with a bull moose this morning (http://davesgarden.com/showthread/268893.html) and it occurred to me that I should brag a bit about the doglets.
They both barked to alert me about the moose in the yard, then responded when I told them to quiet down. The oldest dog headed for the house, and the younger one stayed by my side. When I told her to be quiet, she complied, and when I told her to stay while I moved ahead, she obeyed. When the moose charged me, she stepped forward to bark, but she never attacked the moose or got underfoot.
One could assume that was just good sense, but lots of dogs get kicked by moose, sustaining terrible injury or death. These two dogs did just exactly what they were supposed to do, and they each got a nice steak bone as a reward.
