Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

How big do my Jamakun Yellow, Ecuador Pink, and Frosty Pinks have to get before they bloom??

Eyes... like the rest of the brugs they have to start to Y them they will bloom. If its a cutting and was taken from above the Y it will bloom sooner that if its taken from the main trunk just fertilize it a lot and in notime it will bloom for you

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks Irish, I was beginning to think it didn't like me!!

eyes, your FP and JY should bloom pretty fast, my EP seemed to take longer, maybe it's me. DH? ran mine over with the lawnmower, it was barely coming back from winter. it's about 3" tall again. thank goodness, i have a back up in a pot!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Did ya kick DH in the backside??????

Well..............I'm still waiting!! They're getting taller, and they have formed the Y. They're over 3 ft now!
I feed them and water them.......and they just look at me!!!

I bought one back in april about 3 ft tall with blooms on it and it has bloomed again since and is about 4 1/2 ft tall now and going to bloom again soon!

If you will look closely when it is going to bloom you will see little spikes hanging downward and that is where the blooms are going to be...so watch out for them!

Hope this helps!

Thanks Irish for the information about the cuttings. Didn't know about the above and below y cuttings.

Eyes,
If they have Y'd it's only a matter or time.

eyes - you can also start looking for the sub-equal leaves. If you look at a leaf where it meets the stem and one side of the leaf is higher up the stem than the other side of the leaf, then blooms are on their way.
I waste incredible amounts of time looking for sub-equal leaves. Doesn't speed them up but gives me something to look forward to.

Hey GRC!

There was a thread here awhile back about when they would 'y' and someone said they cut the top out to make it 'y' and someone said you shouldn't do it and so to make a point I did cut the top of one of mine and it is 'y'ing' and am waiting to see if any sooner blooms appear...this was only an experience on my part so I will report the efforts when they sprout soon!

Liz ,I thought I was the only one who runs around looking for the uneven leaves...LOL

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL - CC - patience is not my virtue.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Now wait a minute I just started understanding the y and now I have the sub equal leaves theory to grasp. I'm too old for these complications. Now it's dark but I'll be out looking about daybreak to check it out. Maybe I can find a flashlight. Now what was that about patience. LOL
Rebecca I remember that thread also. Keep us posted on it.
I was looking at my brugs today and I have 5 that has Y'ed and several of them has small buds. So I guess I'll see some blooms this year. I only had one to bloom last year and it was almost winter time when it shelled out the blooms.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Well Liz, you had me in the brug patch tonight. I have about 17 or 18 that have Y'd and the sub-equal leaf thing really does happen. I kinda remember someone talking about that some time ago, but I'm like GRC, just getting down the basics right now.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Brugie - I can't take credit - stole it from the Preissel book. But when you see those leaves, it's just a short time until you have buds.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I do it the easy way when I see a trumpet like flower I know they are blooming??

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

DUH! LOL thats what they are!!!LOL And Irish, you have tons of those trumpet things

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

eyes, do you need any more babies to watch?? can bring to RU

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Pete, I like your method, but just had to go out and look anyway. No flowers, leaves are second best. :-)

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Sure tiG...........would love some. The ones I have that have done well are the Jamaken Yellow, Ecquador Pink, and the Frosty Pink. Am open to any others. Irish!!! You make it sound soooooo easy!!

Hi, About the uneven leaf thing - on my HG that is probably 4 1/2" feet tall and no Y, there are leaves coming out of the bottom as well as on the side of the plant and they are unequal, real unequal, no doubt about it - does that mean maybe, just maybe I will see an HB bloom, even tho no Y?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Yes - you might just be lucky. I have an aurea multihybrid that I got as a cutting locally last fall. I watched him cut it off a long upper lateral. I took that cutting and cut it into 3 pieces - sent one to brugcrazy. It bloomed about 4 months later for both of us at only about a foot tall. I have my fingers crossed for you.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

and Liz what does a aurea multihybrid flower look like?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

well kell, it's blooming again - I'll post a picture tomorrow. Has totally horizontal blooms. It's a no-name - with humungous leaves.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

thanks, Liz. too bad it does not have humungous flowers!!!
