Secrets of the Easter Bunny, Santa and ... farmers
"Santa Claus, The Easter Rabbit, and farmers all share a secret," says
Illinois correspondent John Dappert. The secret is something farmers
learn after years of working the land and tending animals. "The
promises of life revealed to producers everywhere may contain the
answer to why farmers continually plant crops after a poor harvest the
year before, and continue to hold animals for new breeding cycles after
a bout with severe disease outbreaks in the herd that cause financial
ruin." Like the icons of the holidays, life and the land are seasonal. Such
cycles provide fresh reminders each year of what is important. "It is
difficult to find a farmer who is an atheist deep in his heart, as that
continued optimism proven year after year in his profession provides
the basis for a deep and abiding faith in a power much greater than any
person," Dappert says.
