How to prevent mosquito multiply around the pond

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm new to the pond. I want to grow some waterlilies in my pond but here is mosquito season, they will multiple rapidly at the dead water, I would like to know anyone has any suggestion to prevent them from multiply? thanks

Adding fish such as mollies or goldfish to your pond will help get rid of the larvae.......mollies are especially good at eating them. You can buy plain mollies at a pet store for about the same price as the little fancier goldfish. They're prolific breeders too, so your problem should be solved quickly.

Hi Redlotus, Mosquito fish, common to Texas are another possible candidate. You should be able to find them at most bait shops.

I also used a product called 'Mosquito dunks'.
Here is a web site that sells them. You can get them at most pond supply stores. They are a natural, fish safe product.

Redlotus, you can also add water movement in order to reduce the mosquito population (they prefer stagnant water.) Will you have a pump and a filter system in your pond? If so, there are many ways to add a "bubbler" or "spitter" or even a small waterfall in order to provide movement. (Plus it looks and sounds nice!)

Good question Redlotus, I have the same problem.

When i first dug my pond and filled it with water, i had millions of them in the water, they made the edges of the pond black, i put in six little gold fish, and they took care of most of them, im just a few days, but any fish will take them, they are after all a seasonal meal for all fish fry, so dont go getting a big fish, they do eat them, but not as much as young ones.

Thanks everyone, I already got a pack of mosquito dunk and put one onto the water. Thank you again.

Does anyone know if the Mosquitoe dunks are safe for animals who drink out of the pond?
My Poodle and cats drink out of the pond and I dont want to make them sick.
Just read the post about someone having tadpoles in their pond. Would the dunks kill any tadpoles if a frog surprises me with any??
thanks
Janice
