MOST FRAGRANT BRUGS

(Zone 6a)

I am interested in knowing which are the most fragrant brugs......I mean like so fragrant you can smell them from 20 feet away. I have had only three different varieties bloom for me to date, none with overwhelming fragrance: Dr. Seuss, Jamaica Yellow and Versicolor Peach.

I think everyone's opinions on this would be interesting to all of us.

My wild aurea, definitly lol This can be smelled at least 20 ft. away, when it is in heavy bloom lol and its a good bloomer It has a thick, heavy perfume lol Sweet too, but no suaveolens in the smell lol very heavy and overwhelming :-)

I have nights like that too! I've got to go in and help water at the green house then it's off to the Post Office and then to a Garden Party!! Whew, I'll be worn out!!

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

Cala.........I am finally off to bed, it is 4:21 AM.......... what a pleasant way to spend a Saturday, at a garden party! Let us know about the garden. Is it as special as yours?

Dr Seuss was for me last year. have so many I haven't smelled yet.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Solid Gold, Sunray and DrD so far have the most scent here.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

versi Peach whiskers, solid gold and candida flora plena

My Dr. Suess can be noticed for 80 ft. It has 18 open blooms right now. Last year I also enjoyed Versicolor Orange a lot. Just wish they would smell during the day. VO does have a slight fragrance during the day, but evening through early morning it is a real winner. If they smelled any better, I'd never get any work done. Just smell testing. :-)

Tonny.....so far, my Versicolor Peach is the prettiest as well as the most fragrant, but still is not the overwhelming fragrance for which I am looking.

I am surprised to hear that Dr. Seuss is so fragrant, because mine is only very faintly scented when I stick my nose in it:) Maybe it is not really a Dr. Seuss.....the blooms are a nice bright yellow color. Love the color but not the faint fragrance of it. I don't have a digital camera or I would take pics and post some of them. Only have a pc cam for taking pics close by my computer.

Owen, sounds like Jamaica yellow to me, it's pale yellow and not very fragrant.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Ms. Brugie, glad you got the fragrance going. dr suess is extremely fragrant, early last summer a couple of blooms would perk up my nose 30-40 feet away. it's a really good brug and apparently a very good parent plant. i have kyle's pink a hair from opening, monday at the latest, can't wait.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm starting to see an occassional Y forming now, so won't be long!! I'm glad you all are having blooms. It is always so exciting to see the first ones.

Owen,

Just wondering what kind of fragrance you are looking for and maybe, what you can compare it to. I have found a couple of brugs that don't have that wonderful sweet fragrance, but most are just wonderful. Hey, maybe you are going to bed just a little too early. No, just kidding, they generally start smelling good around here at about 6 PM. In fact, I think I'll go out and take a sniff right now.

(Zone 6a)

Cala.....nope, it's not a Jamaica Yellow. I have one of those and know exactly what you mean...no fragrance to mention, and more of a very pale lemon yellow.

Maybe it will start having a stronger fragrance after the blooms get a few days older.

(Zone 6a)

Shirley, I can't describe the fragrance I am looking for. However, I have a friend who has a brug with the fragrance I love.....it is a pale orangish or peachy color, and she does not know what it's name is. I will get a cutting from her and never mind the name:) Not crazy about the color, but can always plant it for fragrance and others for color:)

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Owen, hi again, mine are aureas, candidas and versicolors the most fragrant. :-)

Owen,
You have a V. Peach...has it bloomed yet? I agree with Kyle on the Aureas...MMMMMMmmmmmm good!!!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Mine don't seem to have a sent, the versi peach had a little bit but the white, pink and yellow had basically no sent.Cant wait to get something to bloom that HAS a great scent....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Maybe fragrance is like color and depends on the environment. The first year my "Shirley's Peach" had a great fragrance and was planted in a pot. The next year, planted in the ground, it bloomed much better, but had no fragrance that I could tell. Very disappointing to me because even though they are beautiful, I need that fragrance to make things complete.

I was wondering if the warmer the nights the more fragrance?
We have warm nights here in Mississippi and my yard smells of Brugs everywhere. Anyone have any input on this?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Unfortunately I am not in brug heaven yet with blooms, but I do have a CG blooming now and it is very fragrant at night but not from afar. Here it can be downright chilly at night and very rarely is it actually warm. Usually sweater weather at nighttime.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Our nights are warm and the fragrance is intense. The Jungle House seems to hold the fragrance and intensify it.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i've decided that color intensity of the flowers may be related to fertilizer as well as other factors. honestly some brugs are too intense for me. much prefer other scents.

(Zone 6a)

I am beginning to think that color and fragrance differences are due to many many factors.....would make a good research project for someone with lots of different brugs, lots of time (years) and lots of space:)

Someday we may have the information and then be able to get the most fragrance and color out of our brugs.
