dawn happening already

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

1am and I'm just in from doing some bat stuff and see that the eastern sky is already getting bright.

never noticed it before at this time of year.

You northern Europeans don't know how lucky you are to have bright(ish) skies at night at this time of year. Those light summer nights are something we miss - along with the sea, English bacon, pubs, decent beer being able to leave vegetable crops in the ground in winter, being able to overwinter semi-hardy and frost hardy perennials, your long spring and your lovely mild winters (which you don't appreciate)!!!

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I like the light nights too, but can't understand how can sky get brighten at 1 am? usually it gets a little darker then and about at 2.30-3.00 it starts getting lighter and later it is all light. Maybe it is different there. :/

Yeah, appreciate your long growing season ;)

Hi, Mark. Our nights are very short here, as well. It seems strange sometimes to hear the birds chirping at 2am. When do you suppose they sleep?

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Weez, I have been wondering the bird thing too, they're all singing on the early hours :D

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I've noticed that our little pine siskens seem to like to squabble over spots on the bird feeder. Maybe they are all crabby from staying up all night chirping! When the long days come to Alaska, you can step outside into dawn about 2 or 3am. It's quite a contrast from the dark winters!

I love siskins - don't know if the ones we get are the same as yours Weez, but they come to my peanut feeders in the winter time. Spose they're all up with you at the moment Evert??

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

We don't have siskins in my area, but I have seen them sometimes.. ;)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

They visit our feeder all summer here, fighting and squabbling over the feeder holes. There is plenty for everyone, but they just seem to like to aggravate each other. Dennis likes to sit at the kitchen table with his morning coffee and watch the pine siskins and the hummingbirds. I've never checked to see if the hummingbirds feed in the wee hours of the morning.

Ooooh, i'd love to have humming birds! Have seen them in the West Indies, but to have them in your garden all summer...........!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't realise they would be as far north as you WZ

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I guess I shouldn't say they are here all summer. I think they leave at some point, but they are usually here a good part of our summer. I know we see the rufus (sp?), and I think there is another variety with a longer bill that visits, too. We cook up the syrup in the microwave, then let it cool and keep it in jars. In a busy year, they can go through a feeder full in a day or two. I don't see as many this year as we usually have.

We don't feed the larger birds around here. They can become real pests. The Blue Jays pull up plants and taunt the dogs. The camp robbers (some sort of large black and white bird), as well as the big ravens, get into garbage and tear things up. We have feeder for the small birds that has thistles seed and crushed, hulled sunflower seeds in it. The pine siskins are eating better than we are!

LOL, know the feeling i used to spend a fortune on bird food. Have been a bit mean recently - but they still get any leftovers.
