Little Yellow Flowers

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

In my pond grows a charming little yellow flower. It appears to grow out of a fibrous mat of hair-like strands of roots or stems. The little flowers sprout out of the mat that floats. It is easy to take apart but will cover if it is let go. I just pull out the middle stuff and let it be a nice transition to dry ground at the edges. The flower is pea-like about 1/2 inch wide on a very fine stem about 2 inches long. The round leaf in the pic is pennywort so you can see how tiny the flower is beside it.

I forgot to ask my question in the above post: Does anyone know what this plant is?

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

It is a pretty flower. I wish I did know what it was. Good Luck and let me know what it is called if you find out. :)

I've not been having much luck identifying it. I've got it posted on the GardenWeb Pond Gallery and Forum, too. Some people have made good suggestions, but all, for this or that reason, haven't fit. It seems a benign little plant. If I ever do find out what it is, I'll post it. Thanks for your interest.

If the leaves resemble a very small water lily it's floating heart. Wanna share? "T" :)

Sledder, it doesn't have leaves. Or not recognizable leaves, anyway. The stem of the flower is about 2 inches long with a couple of hairlike roots on the end and a single flower at the other end. It grows in a floating mat of green filaments, those filaments have teensy tiny little balls on them that may be seeds.

I would be glad to share if I knew what this was. I wouldn't like to be sending something that might be invasive.

ummm,,,I'll think some more. "T"

Is it a variety of Utricularia ?

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

It didn't seem to fit into Utricularia info that I read. Leaves and flowering habit different.

Maybe I'm alittle crazy..but I'm still thinking floating heart. I had one once and it bloomed without leaves. Then the leaves appeared. The flower looks like it. I'm still thinking though. "T" :)

Here's some info from a Google search on yellow floating heart:

Bright, yellow flowers about an inch or so in diameter.
Two to five flowers from each flower stalk.
Five petals per flower with a distinctive fringe along the edges of the petals.
Petals arranged like the spokes of a wheel.
Heart-shaped floating leaves with slightly wavy margins and purplish undersides.

And here's the differences:

My flowers are only about 1/2 inch
One flower per stalk
Petals are smooth edged
Petals not quite arranged like spokes, more irregular
No visible leaves

Keep thinking! :-) I appreciate anything you can come up with.

Whoopee! I think I've found what it is. It seems to match very closely to Utricularia gibba. Here's where you can see it. http://www.geocities.com/nz_cp/utricularia/gibba/gibba.html

I appreciate everyone's efforts to help with the ID. Thanks Crestedchick for your suggestion. The first Utric. I looked at weren't quite right, but finally found it.

Sledder if you still want a 'share' I will try to figure how to propagate it. I don't know if it will grow from a piece of it or not.
