Hi Everyone!! My pond is now about a month and a half old. I have a bog filter at the top that dumps into a stream that is about 10 ft long that pours into a 9 ft x 9 ft pond that is 24 inches deep. The first day I set it up, I got a big bundle of Barley Straw and then later had my water checked and was told it was fine. I have about 9 fish in it, and I have had about 3 die. I replaced them and I am just wanting to ask a few ?'s. When we 1st did the pond we got some mud in it and I tried to get it all out, but couldn't get every bit of it, but did manage to get most of it. I added Some pond Clarifyer so that my pump could get the mud particles out easier and that seemed to work. I also added the stuff to rid it of chlorine and heavy metals and all. All but one of the 1st fish I got have been just fine. I am just wondering is there anything like Pond Salt or anything I do not know about that I should add. I have about 5-6 Water Lily's, Parrot's Feather, Water Hyacinth's, Water lettuce, Arrowhead, Cattails, and a Blue Pickerel in the big part of the pond. In the bog I have Black Gamecock Iris, Black Elephant ears, hyacinths, and water Iris. My water is clear so far other than maybe a little string algae on the sides, but Knock on wood-no Green Water yet. Is there anything else I should do to improve my water Quality, just incase the fish died from a problem. I guess 3 isn't bad, but 2 of them died in the last week and a half. Just need a few pointers. Please LMK if anyone can think of anything organic I could do w/o adding chemicals.
Please LMK if there is anything I should do, or anything I can do to improve the quality of my water and fish health!
Thanks, Traci S
Pond ???'s
Come on!! Please some of you ponders, HELP!!!!!!!
SOMEBODY!!!!!
my advice is leave well enough alone. Your fish will adapt. The best thing to do for your fish is learn about fish diseases and how to treat them. That way you'll know if something goes wrong.
Traci I did use the chlorine remover and was told if you just top the pond off when it is a sunny day the sun will remove it for you. I quit using it and haven't had any problems. I haven't had any to die. I think I have a cat napper eating some fish now and then. I did have one when I first put in the pond that had some kind of skin disease and it died. I wish I could give you more info. I would wait a while and see how things go. It could be the fish were sick when you bought them.
Jim, are you on a well, or county water? I went to top off the pond for the first time since we got on county water, and didn't because I was worried about the clorine.
I have nothing but city water and I don't any anything when I top off. Not a problem with that at all. My water is clear so far also (crossing fingers). But I'm battling string algae. Any thoughts on that? I keep gathering with my trusty toilet brush but I'm just barely staying ahead of it. My plants aren't growing very well either. I hope it's just our strange weather. Hey tiG, what's that algae stuff that you use again? Tks!! "T" :)
it's algaefix and you can get it at http://www.thewatergardenshop.com
Aren't you adorable...Thank you!! "T" :)
ummm...no, hot and sweaty!! LOL!!!
Traci, sometimes it just takes a little while for your pond to get 'balanced'. I agree with the give it some time advice above. Just relax and enjoy your beautiful pond :~)

It is growing on a few of my plants too, but it isn't stopping my water lily's from blooming their heads iff!! They are so beautiful!! I got a Comanche the other day, and can't wait to see it bloom!!!
