Glory - I thought someone said James was orange. Is my monitor off colour?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

is he in a compost heaP?

Liz,
I really have no idea what color James is supposed to be but this is the first day they are opened...maybe they will get darker. Maybe I'll email Larry and see if this is correct.

CC,
I guess you could call this a compost. DH built me a 32'x3' box for my experiments and the only soil in it is compost....it really works well. It is located in the far back yard by the boat shed...which is a great place for it...out of the way.

I have a James I grew from seed. It hasn't bloomed yet but I think he did say it would turn deep orange. Let us know if it changes color glory.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

snow, it won't be James, then will it? do you know what it was crossed with?

According to Larry it will get darker orange as it matures and is a super bloomer.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Snow, if you grew your James from seed, it is a new plant and hybrid, not James anymore.

Rose Hill, NC(Zone 8a)

the perfume from "James" is like a pheromone to most men
we have had many parole officers to come "visit" 2 of the foster kids over the years and so far not one man hasn't loved to smell it every time they came...
i have given away many cuttings lol
if given plenty of water and fert. (i use time rel. and water sol.) he should grow at least 10 ft. per year.( i have to water 3 times a day here now in this heat) good seed pod setter and they mature fairly fast. i let him get 22ft. one year befor i cut him back that fall.
he will start out very light lemmon yellow and end up a dark pumpkin orange depending on the temp.
when the cutting was 2 yrs. old it had 4 rushes that summer
each one had at least 150 blooms at one time durning the 3 week periods.
"James" was a cutting given to me by James that was renting one of our houses. He has aids and had to move back home to be with his family. I went to the little ma and pa greenhouse where he bought it. They had had it for about 25 years and no name. They had gotten it as a seedling for someone in the N.C. Dept. Agriculture they were friends with at that time. This man was growing brugs in his backyard in Raleigh at the time. They couldn't remember his name!
So I asked them if they wouldn't mind if i named it after the guy they had sold so many plants to over the years. I got an a OK. James was very pleased and is doing fine now under a new program at Duke.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I would love to have this again if someone has a cutting. I bought 2, traded one away and the other didn't make it through the winter.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Very pretty Gloria. Would love to get a cutting also if and when any is available.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I guess mine will be a surprise if it ever gets to the flowering stage.Have no idea what it was crossed with since the seeds were given to me.

Thanks Larry.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

So nice to hear the background. Tig, mine didn't over winter and i could never get it to grow much last fall, don't know why. sure sounds like a super brug.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I know, dark pumpkin?? sounds gorgeous!

Once it gets some size to it I'll take some cuttings.

Update: The smell is outstanding but the color reminds me a lot of Dr. Suess....maybe it will get darker with age or even the next flush. More later.

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Glory, Would you please save a cutting for me.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Glory, I would love to have a cutting if you have enough the other cutting is in the ground doing fine.

Tonny,
It's pretty much Aurea smelling...I think. I will have Whiskers and Dr Suess blooming in the next few days so then I'll let you know for sure.

Yes, please do lol Larry told me much about the plant last November and I had a cutting, that dies, so I always wanted to know, what it looked like lol Now I have several pots full of seedlings labeled James and James x They are from 6-11 leaves tall and I hope they will bloom this year, but when thinking of the hight it reached for Larry I expect it to be more like 2-3 years in this climate :-)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Add me too if I'm not too late!
