Here are the leaves on Knightii

TiG, can you believe how your nightie has grown?

no, LOL!! but is there any chance that you might have labeled this Species? mine in question have that same exact leaf shape.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Nope, no chance. I put it in a starter pot as soon as I got home with a label. I wasn't planting anything else the day I moved it to a bigger pot. I put all my double whites close together and there are differences in the leaves on each variety.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

okay, cause the one you gave me labeled Species, you brought when we went to FL. thanks :) wish I could see them in person, the pictures are just confusing me. The Double White, are they serrated?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, I'm gonna wait till I get blooms on both plants, then I will tag them "hose in hose" and "scrunched up inside", that way there won't be any confusion, lol.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

You know what, that looks like the Fantasma that I got from Kartuz. Will take a picture when I get home. Ya'll just don't want to know how many plants I have bought so far.

Come on, DeeinFL! Fess up! hehehe

Just wondering how many of your clothes you are going to have to leave there. When I went to Milwaukee to visit Renee, I ended up sending my dirty clothes home UPS so I could carry the good stuff home. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd pay to send dirty laundry home. :-)

Now there's an idea!

LOL Shirley. Way to go!

Cala, How hard is it to root a Species. I've got a small shoot coming up from the main stalk and it's about two inches high with some nice leaves. Can it be cut off and rooted this small or is it better to wait till it's bigger?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Snow, it can be rooted this small, but I'd let it get to be about 4 inches long. It's easier then. Just dip it in rooting hormone and stick it in vermiculite or sand.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Thanks Cala.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Cala, do you do your tip cuttings in sand? do you put rooting hormone on the tip cuttings?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Tig, yes I use sand or vermiculite, I hardly ever root anything in potting soil. I use Shultz root started, the liquid that's in the big yellow jug that you can get at Wallyworld.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

when you say you use the Shultz, is that what you water with? do you use anything like rootone? sorry, I've just never started in sand, and want to try. play sand? (I know, I sent you an email, but maybe this could help more than me)
holes in bottom of container?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, I use play sand because it's usually been sterilized. I cut the top off either a water bottle or a 20oz coke bottle depending on how many cuttings I need to do. I fill the bottom part with either sand or vermiculite(you can mix these too), wet it good, but not till the sand is floating. I dip the tip cutting in Shultz root started, take a pencil or stick and make a hole in the medium, stick the cutting in, water with plain water to settle the sand around the cutting and put the top back on. Don't put it in the hot sun or you will cook your cutting!! After about 5 days I take the top off, they only need the extra humidity for a few days(unless you're using the teeny 1mm ones like I do in the winter). If you're like me and have the little rooting pots sitting on top of the big brug pots and have a tendency to fill them with water while watering the big brugs, make a tiny hole in the bottom so the extra water can drain out. I've had them floating a few times, it really doesn't seem to hurt them unless the cuttings are so tiny that they float away.
I like the clear containers because you can see the new roots forming.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if I put them in the shade, still put the top on? it's 95 here and I wonder if even the shade would cook them with a top. I will follow your directions, just wondering if the heat here is too much. and it's plenty humid, I garontee!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Also if you have a small cutting do you take all but the very top leaves off to root it?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, leave the top off and if they look too wilted, mist them.
Snow, yes, take all but the two newest leaves off. This reduces water loss.
