All the sudden my water is unclear. Green? HELP!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

3 days ago it was fine. Then things got hotter. its rained quite a few times and now. I can;t see the bottom of my pond. It almost looks green? Never did that before. I got 5 little fishy from a friend tonite and when I put them in. they totally disappeared from sight! They have a product I can add to clear the pond with fish in it??? PLUS>>.I just saw on that site that ruby42 listed, they say to add bacteria to your pond????? Whats that all about? I need help!!!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Sounds like an algae bloom starting up. There are a couple recent threads on this forum that address different ways to handle it, while being safe for fish in your pond. Getting and keeping a clear pond is an ongoing process :)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I wouldn't add bacteria. I would get Algaefix, I posted an online source for it, got here really fast. you didn't do anything wrong, rain will set it off a lot of times. Algaefix is safe for the fish and plants.

I vote with tiG, the warm weather and fresh rain are the algaes answer to heaven. Please use the AlgaeFix. it is wonderful.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

it will only take 2 days, that's not so bad:)

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

ok! Will get right on that .
Maybe I'll hit it lucky adn someone will have it. Like Agway. Probably not though with my luck . Thanks for all your help

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Mings, Walmart and Home Depot carry it. That's where I get mine. "T" :)

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Talked to the man at the pet stpre. he was telling me that my parrots feather and floating things of the sort should take card of that problem? But sugguested something called AQUAREM by TetraPond. ???? I haven;t opened it yet. Says to use it in the morning on the direections. Now. what all do you think. maybe I will call Wallyworld ans see if they haveAlgaefix. THis other says it is a water clarifier and it clumps things for easy removal.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Ming,

I would stick with finding the AlgaeFix. We bought some last week (thanks to tiG's info) and the stuff is going away fast.
I have a few fish and plants in my pond, and everything is doing well.

Get the real stuff, but it is a little pricey, but it works.
My DH got it at our local pet store.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

clumping won't help the pea soup algae. call around and see if you can find the algaefix, it really is worth it.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Called walmart 3 times. The switchboard lady had the brains of this algae. She couldn;t get me connected. Am going there tomorrow. Hopefully. its there. :) thanks all...for your help./ I needed the hand holding!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

but you could have had it in hand if you'd ordered on line:) that's what I like about it, not having to chase anything down.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Don;t do credit cards.
So, I will have to call them if I can;t find it at Walmart and send a money order.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

well, that's another story!! I understand :) do you have a Home Depot? someone said they have it there.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

the Po is about 17 miles from here. Am checking Wally first. then Po. Busy Busy!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

good luck girl!!!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Well, back to square one. The stuff I got last nite. I must live is too small an area. I told them where ever I went...You SHOULD order this stuff. They have Everything. cept something for Algae. Now. Shouldn;t that be a #1 thing???So, I put in this stuff/ mentioned above. and now. its clumping the algae. trying to scoop it oout with m net. Net is fine mesh. Thisk maybe cheese cloth one would work better. If there was such a thing. Strange how just having parrotts feather in there has seemed to help???? Or am I seeing things.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

~~UPDATE ~WOW! my pond is clearing up! Little by little. but. How DO I skim off all that algae that is in clumps. It goes right through the fine mesh fish net. Any ideas>

New Albany, MS(Zone 7a)

Try taking a wire coat hanger and bending it into a circle. Put you a pair of old panty hose on it and use that as a net. You can use fishing line to sew the panty hose onto the wire coat hanger. let us know how that works.

Well...There was a pond accident today while I was at work.
Somehow. (this is not the first time)....The water in the top bog pond gets to high......and that causes the water to drain out the back of it....a trickle at a time.....and WHAM!!!!!! All the water is gone in the bottom pond. I don;t quite understand it myself. But . Like I say. it has happened before. So.......Needless to say. It took away alot of my algae with it. But. the pond product was clearing it up too. That panty hose thing sounds like a good idea. I just got the pond all refilled. OY! what a job. I am half ready to pack it in with that pond and just fill in the hole.

New Albany, MS(Zone 7a)

Don't do that. Everyone has a disaster everyonce in a while. Last week, I had a pond drain half way empty due to a water fall falling down and my supply tube that feeds the water to the waterfall then laying on the ground. But I fixed that dang problem. Now it want happen again. So keep up your spirits and don't give up yet.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

its an awful feeling going to look at it and see 75% of the water gone. :( But. I do like it. Water made it through the nite. I have to figure something out. Don;t kow what

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

mimi, you're liable to get a new flush of algae, hate to tell you. the algaefix is a preventative too.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

but. before I never had pond plants on the surface. Just in the shelves. Do;t you think that will make a difference? Plus. this time. I'll be watchin! I knows whats to looks for! lolol.....little green buggers!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

only if your entire surface is covered. you'll just have to wait and see now. wishing you the best:)
new water is always asking for trouble, even though you didn't do it on purpose :(

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

oh, lovely. No. about 60 or so % is covered. Oh well. Whats ya gonna do. I have my stuff. I can only do so much. So, then everyone gets this algae trouble> Or was I just lucky.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

nothing you can do about it! 60% is pretty good though, that will help.
don't know if everyone gets it, but it's pretty commom to have a spring flush of algae.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

AAAAAAH! Spring!~~Thanks for all your help!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

The plants do make a big difference, don't they? Our water was dark and impenetrable by light until the plants. We added a couple small water hyacinth and water lettuce, and a handful of frog bit. The parrot's feather which overwintered started growing again, and the water lily started sending up its leaves. I also bought a barley straw bundle, to head off string algae.

The pond's really cleared up now, though there's gunk down in the bottom I'd like to get out of there. We never did empty and clean it like we'd planned to -- looks like it wasn't necessary after all!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

tiG>>>So odd that this came up around again. Guess whats back?? Its been a week almost since I lost most of the pond water. You were right! FLUSH!!!! Back again. I added some stuff last nite before I went to bed. I haven;t been out there yet. A pile ofdirt is looking better and better.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

just keep saying 'it will clear up, it will clear up' or try this 'such a lovely shade of green, I sure can grow algae well.... '
:)

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

I put in atleast 5 fish that were given to me and I haven;t seen them since. My pond isn;t that big!!!!!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

they love to hide, I'm sure they are there. just don't feed them too much right now, that will feed the algae, they can eat the algae too. so sorry you're facing this again, but it's one of the things that happen when you love ponds. Green water isn't so bad, it isn't unhealthy, in fact, I think it's just the opposite (in a matter of speaking). Anyway, just learn to love the green water, treat it and before you know it, it will clear up and your lovely fishies will be coming to the top to see you.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

tiG. thanks. i think I needed a pep talk. i really don;t want to get rid of it. It was sugguested by either you or someone at the pet store that I just use floating plants. not ones in dirt. that maybe that would work better for me. Think I best get out there and take a look see as to whats going on.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if you can get water hyacinths, they will suck the nutrients right into their roots. and give you lucious flowers as a reward.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Will look for those. my local place that has water plants lost all theirs wilt the hail and cold snaps we had had. They should have some in by now. Do those winter over?
