Pete,
Kitty litter should help hold the mosture....right?

Kitter, is this the stuff you put in the cats poo-box? lol

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

That's right Tonny - great stuff - has many uses. I even keep a bag of it in the trunk of my car when I drive up into the mountains during the winter in case I get stuck in the snow. Sprinkle it under the tires and you get traction.
Irish- what made you choose it for planting the brug?

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

yea Tony just scoop out the tootise rolls and your good to go

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL!!! I imagine this serves the same purpose as perlite? wonder if it's cheaper and/or better?

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I don't think so tiG I am thinking that it will help hold moisture like the crystal stuff

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Great idea Pete. I'm going to give this a try. I've been buying Schultz soil conditioner, but kitty litter would be less expensive and should do the same thing.

Wally likes kitty tootsie rolls, lol. That's great if it cuts down on water. So, did you buy the good stuff or the cheap kind?

I'm telling you being on the Brug forum is better then watching TV...ya never know whats coming up next. LOL

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Irish, how long has it been in the pot? my pots get so full of roots there is not much room for water. good idea, the cat litter.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Irish . . did you use the kind that clumps when moisture gets on it or the cheaper kind?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

EWWW - Cala - your dog likes tootsie rolls? (I can't believe I asked that)

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I used scoop way it does clump, I mixed it with the soil when everything was dry. I started putting it in the holes when I plant in the ground just a handful or two and mix it in the soil with osmocote then plant this was my frist atemp at using it in a pot seems to be doing ok with it

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Yep Liz, I hate to admit it, but Wally's a "sooner", lol. We try to keep the door closed, but if the kitties are all over the house, they need to get in there too. It's funny, he knows he's bad when he does it and hides his face.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Won't the kitty litter dry hard as a rock ,like clay does,if you miss a day of watering?

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

CC.... it will if its not mixed with somthing ealse I mix sand which is what the soil I have here and some munure from a bag so it is not all lumped together

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Great thread! I have sandy soil all over my yard, and from now on I'm going to throw some kitty litter (unused of course), in the hole with the plants I plant, along with some purchased topsoil.
