Does all any kind of Brugs

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Use full sun???

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Yes.. Mine are in the full SUN. They look happy in the SUN.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a few they need to be watered more, show signs of heat stress by the time I get home from work but other than that are doing good

Several of mine are in sun 3/4 or more of the day. Only sanguinea and vulcanicola is in shade and gets only late afternoon and evening sun :-)

Where do you plan to plant yours, Redrose?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I am planning on to put on the ground this weekend to make sure right place to put full sun or what that why I am asking.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

This is the first year I have had any to plant anywhere besides the one I have in full sun. It wilts very badly in the heat of the day. I think it might be best to just let them get morning sun rather than all day full sun - at least here in GA where it is so dry as well as hot. My new babies will not get full sun, hope they still have lots of blooms.

RedRose,
Since we(you as well as me) live in a very hot area full sun does a number on Brugs especially the ones with fuzzy leaves. Full sun is ok up North but here it's pretty rough on the Brugs....just my 2 cents.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Ok Thank Glory, That what I was worry about that true so hot here during summer time, I will find a way where to put a better place should be okay not a quite full sun almost full. Thanks!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

RR... most of the brugs i have, i planted on the ground with partial shade. some of the ones on the pots were in full sun before but they looked sick. over the weekend, i had moved the potted ones under the canopy of a tree and they are doing much better. common sense should be ur guide as we all do live in different zones.

since i live in the desert, and we are about 3,890' above sea level. the sun here is far more intense than where u would be. i have another enemy, the strong winds... min. would be 10-15 mi./hr. when the wind is worst it could be gusting like 20-35 mi./hr. there are no rain in the desert either. we have 360 days of the year to be sunny. it could be raining in all surrounding area, and we are bone dry.

btw... i worked the ground with lots of steer manure and peat moss cause of the harsh sandy desert soil - to help the brug retain moisture.

hope that help u :).

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

they're going to need at least good morning sun to bloom good.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

tiG... the entire garden space i have has full day sun. both morning and afternoon. sun flows through in between the canopy of the tree.

the brugs are doing good, except something is eating the leaves. mind u there are no slugs or snails in the desert. they will never survive the harsh sand. i have used safer soap, and liquid sevin. and i spray them religiously. still something is eating the leaves. prior to spraying i used to have skeletonized leaves.

there are plenty of new growths, but the leaves are just being eaten by something. i even resulted in using diazonon on the ground. i still could find the culprits. do u or anyone know what could be eating the leaves?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I've been finding small one inch or less caterpillars on mine. of course, they are no more, sorry! I had to get down at eye level and check them all. The ones I was finding were up close to the stem, but yes, the bigger leaves are eaten too.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

no caterpillars either. whatever is eating the leaves must be something of miniscule size not visible to the naked eye. there are no spiders or spider web either. a real big puzzle, if i should say so myself. it happens both day and night time. i do inspect the leaves and don't see anthing hoovering around them, but don't see nothing either. i do a very close watch down to eye level nothing to show for the mysterious enemy.

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8a)

There is something eating on my leaves too. Mostly it leaves roundish holes in the middle of the leaves. I did find a tiny worm-like critter on one of mine the other day. Picked it off and squooshed it flat. I will be checking for others but I wonder what they are.

(Zone 6a)

jopo.....what color was the worm you squooshed flat? lol

tiG,
I'm really not sure about that sun theory on all Brugs. My Shredded White gets no sun and it blooms all summer....maybe because it is a downey leafed Brug. I'm afraid to even try it in the sun due to the sun burning the leaves. Anyone have any input on this one?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Something has made lots of holes in my leaves. I can't for the life of me figure out what it is either. Some of the holes are bigger than a quarter, and seem to suddenly appear. I did find a few caterpillars, fuzzy white ones about 2 inches long, but not enough to do this much damage.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Forgive me for quoting Monika again - she said the doubles don't like sun and wind.

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8a)

oblambert, it was a sort of light redish brown I think.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Other days ago, I found several green caterpillar on brugs which it is hard to find. AFTer I noticed something ate up the brugs leaves.. I went and look under leaves and found several caterpillar with hook on back which you usually find them on tomatoes plants.. ugh..... I killed them all.. I have been checking on brugs every days..

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

I wonder if the old "Foil" trick would work to "Foil" these little buggers!! I put a 2-3 in piece of foil around the base of my tomatoes - cutworm never cross it. Unless of course some flying insect is laying eggs on the leaves. Would be worth a try!

Everything truly loves brugs. i have all kinds of catepilars. the roundish holes are likely some kind of beetle, those foolsgold bugs i have some smaller bluish/green ones that are bad, never saw them before this year. i mash them. i have a huge fat cat has almost eaten up kyle's pink, other kinds of cats. btw, i have some hummer moths that come out in the daytime. they have those ugly cutworm catepillars. haven't seen the assasins that were eating cats for a while. now, all my brugs don't look terrible but i do mash those beetles every chance i get. grasshoppers like them too.

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8a)

Well, dang! Where does their "poisoness" come in?! Is it just harmful to people and animals? I think someone goofed at the factory myself. hehehe

A catapillar also took the top of one of my small ones. Think I will try and alu-foil them too lol There are also lots of large, black slugs. We have a damp forrest nearby, so it won`t help to get rid of them. There will be lots of new ones coming in every night. So I have to figure, how to protect the Brugs WITH slugs beneath them lol

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

jopo, you've entered a dangerous site. looks like i saw farm land in your pic, you'll be figuring out how much land to plant in seedlings and what kinds, beware! you thought you had brugs, betting you'll be raising 100s of seedlings!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

okay, I'm going to have to move my double white. it's in full sun. I missed that. How much shade can it take Gloria?
no sun? is that dark shade? dappled? Must move HG too then.

tiG,
Not dark...just no direct sun...dabble should be fine. My HG does get about 3 hours of early morning sun but very early like sunrise and it's getting ready to bloom.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

This is good to know. I'm just getting ready to plant my doubles out this week. I'll have to find a shady spot for them.

I find that most of mine do the best in light shade and or morning sun

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8a)

Oh lordy, arlene! Sorry, but there is no farmland at my place. (I wonder how much of the sidewalk I could take up on the street in front. Hmmmmmm.)
