First Seedlings

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

These are some of the first seedlings I planted. They are really growing. I moved these into the cold frame to keep them from getting frosted on last week.

Great looking plants.......When did you plant the seeds? They have nice size to them. Do you expect them to bloom this summer? Gee, aren't I just full of questions.....???

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

mine don't look half that good, maybe next year .....

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

These were planted in Sept, Oct, and Dec. I have them in 12 inch pots, in Pro Mix and use half cup of Osmocote in each pot and use Master Blend once a week. Some of them have buds, some don't.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Wow Cala, those are terrific looking.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

They look to be WAAAY past the seedling stage. LOL
So tell us - who are they? who are their parents? what are their intentions? Sorry :~))))

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The ones from Earl were just listed as "pinks, golds, yellows" so don't have a clue as to their parents. There are some in there from CC, I think hers was FP. The others are CG X EP and there are 2 from Snow. I think hers were versicolors.

These are great looking :-)

Tonny
I've rooted cuttings of some of these seedlings to send to you. They only have numbers right now. No sense naming them till I see them bloom.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

WOW!! Healthy plants!!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

wow, those are big for seedlings :)

Cala, did you root these also? Thanks a million! :-) It will feel very familiar, that these have only numbers lol All my Daturas is named D- something or Datu- something else lol It rarely occurs to me in my daily work with the plants, which species they are, but when I think for example Datu-R 45 a very clear picture of the plant turns up lol By now I can imagine 130 Daturas by Datu-numbers lol

Cala, great looking plants. 1/2 cup of Osmocote on each, WOW. I only use a couple teaspoons. I need to find a source to buy it cheaper. It cost about $8 for 1 lb. jar here. Looks like it's really working.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

We get 50# for $50. From the green house supply place, they deliver it for $5.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Home Depot has 10 lbs for $17

Is it osmocote brand or a different name? There's a home depot a couple of hours away from here. I'll have to check and see if they have it in 10# bags.

Jeanne,
I think Osmocote is made by Scott. Has anyone ever tried the other timed released fertilizers?

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i used two 20 pound bags of vigoro bloom booster time release... wasn't happy with it, think it's only supposed to last a month. went back to osmocote today, 50 pounds "made for florida".... 16-6-12 i think, gonna look at the bag, may take it back and get the one with minors. i was really happy with the one with minors in it.

Arlene,
I think I'll stick with Osmocote too.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Glory, the kind i got says it lasts 10 months, 6 months in south florida. wish i'd put it out 2 months ago. i look at pics, and my plants, and boy they need food! been doing the liquid bloom booster to try to catch some up.
will have open pink candida and creamsickle within 2 days, have buds on kyle's pink, what i think is rosabelle (very thin and long), and culebra.
Dee...you can't believe my culebra...it is chest high on me!!! you must remember looking down at it when you were first here in april.

Might have to make a trip to the States to buy big bags of Osmocote. LOL. I'm headed down the Oregon Coast to SF in October, guess it'll be on my buy list. The stuff we get here comes in jars of 567 gms, made in Marysville, OH by Scotts-Sierra and cost about $7 CDN. Maybe they don't export the big bags of it. Anyone from Canada ever see big bags of it???

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Seed and feed stores sell 50 pound bags here, last year the nursery i frequent sold me a 50 pound bag, not much mark up either i found out.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Arlene, what are you doing that makes Culebra grow so well? Mine is just a mass of leaves and one bud, but no height. Am I just needing warmth and sunshine maybe? I planted it with peat and composted manure along with Osmocote and watersorb. Maybe it needs a good dose of Peters double strength to give it a jump start or even some Up-Start.

Can you see me crossing the border with DH, the Boxer dog and a couple 50 LB. bags of Osmocote sitting on top of the 1983 VW Westfalia . Should be interesting.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Once it starts, it just goes. it's in about a 12-15 gallon pot, gets full sun from sun up to about 4....i run the sprinkler every day. used my last osmocote from last year on it a few weeks ago. it is gorgeous. some leaves must be 15 inches long or longer. (does this sound like a fish story?) once it starts, it should get going. ...

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

brugcrazy, our HD does sell Osmocoate in the 10 lb bags.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

So you only use Osmocote? No other fertilizing program? I think it must be that we haven't had warm weather since I've had them in the ground. We are supposed to be in the 70's and low 80's for the next few days and maybe then it will get warm. :-)

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Brugie, basically yes. i might have hit it with some bloom booster liquid a while back. now, it's chest high in the pot, not in the ground, but is going to town.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Okay, I'm going to do some fertilizing just as soon as we dry out a bit. Thanks Arlene.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

All long time fertilizer with the exception of Triabon have one problem; they need soil temperatures above 12°C to release the fertilizer and the amount is to small to nourish a Brugmansia properly. Arlene in Florida doesnt need to worry about that at all, but snowhermit or Glory in Iowa have to consider this when using Osmocote. The other point, it is too expensive. A 25kg (50 Pounds) bag costs here DM 120, Triabon about 180 DM. 1kg has 1000g.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

It is relatively expensive, but within two weeks this spring i used 40 pounds of a cheaper time release that cost me $14.00, didn't get everything done and it just doesn't work that well. (not counting the acid/azalea fertilizer, the last of my osmocote from last year & 2-3 large boxes of bloom booster). Last year i used most of a 50 pound bag that cost me $75.00. we have six acres and i have too many plants to fertilize them every week or two. The osmocote release seems to based on heat, the hotter the shorter time it lasts, according to the big bags it lists the temps, when cooler it does release that much.
Nothing wrong at all with the liquid/fish emulsion thing, i would probably do it if i didn't have to work and didn't have 2 kids with a lot of activities.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Sorry Arlene, but this was not written as a reproach to you. I just wrote about the different aspects of long time fertilizer.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Cala, I finally stumbled over my Passiflora color slides.
If you are interested, I will post some in the Tropical section in the near future. At the moment, I pot seedlings, from 50cm up to 2.45m height. But it is so hot outside at the moment, that I had to cool off in the house.

One of the EP x Rothkirch cross has several buds, the flowers have already come through the calyxes. It had its Y already last November, but since I overwinter my plants very cool and with having only 6 hrs daylight, they quit growing.

I would post a picture, but I dont have a Digi-Camera.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Monika, didn't take it as a reproach, things are just different all over, and lots of avenues go to the same place. I did look at the bag closer, it is supposed to last for 10 months at 90 degrees!!! this will carry me into next summer, i believe its 12-9-14 or 16-9-14.

i'd like to see the passiflora slides. in truth, i grow them for the butterflies. once the encarta get to blooming good, there are no more flowers on them the rest of the year. not sure about the other kinds i have now.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

You are not only in Brug- you live in the Flower heaven, Arlene.
Passifloras are excellent butterfly and honey bee Food plants. We can grow outside P. caerulea, incarnata and x violacea in sheltered positions, even overwinter outside but it must be a well drained place and good thick layer of straw for protection. In strong winters, they freeze completely.
