Bog Garden?

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

How can I make one say on the deck in a small container like say maybe a kiddie pool? What do I need? Never did anything like this before so any info would be appreciated :)

Hey Flo!
I just made one when I had to clean algae out of water it was so thick I could not see fish unless they came to the top of water!
We went to Lowe's and bought a preformed 55 gallon pond which sits above the pond and DH cut a hole in it and siliconed a flexible pipe in it to empty out the water...We filled it with pea gravel and lava stone (don't use the lava because it had to be washed too much and water turned RED!) You should rinse the pea gravel also, but it is cleaner!
I formed a [profanity removed] with pea gravel so water will not go over it and also put a piece of screenwire over outlet hole and placed pillow batting against it to help catch the algae...
I hope I explained this okay and my water has cleared in 2 days and can see the bottom again thankfully and fish are gleaming too!
I haven't put plants in yet until water is clean and pure!

Hope this helps!
Rebecca

isn't a bog more like a swamp? I'm totally lost now Rebecca........LOL

but about how to keep my pond clean, that might work for that :)

a kiddie pool would work great. if you can get some of the cheap black plastic you can line it and the blue won't show. Fill it with soil/sand mix and it will hold enough water for bog plants. You don't want standing water probably, but with no drainage holes, this would work good. We wanted a small bog next to the pond, we just dug a hole, put down plastic and put sand on top, it works real good.

How about a large plastic tub that's shaped like a giant planter. I've seen them at Walmart and they weren't very expensive at all. I'm just trying to give you an idea... "T" :)

I made a bog garden with a wading pool, but didn't think to use the black plastic, mine is still blue. I put rocks across the middle of the pool, filled one half with peat moss(wet it first with warm water and it's not so powdery) and filled the other half with water up to the rocks. I drilled holes at the water line so it wouldn't overflow and make the peat float(learned this the hard way after a huge downpour of rain). It works great for my bog plants and I can put floaters on the water side.

I made one ,and I'm sorry I took it out now.I deepened a depression in the lawn,(about a foot deep) lined it with an old plastic tarp, poked holes in it so it drained ,but drained real slow.Filled it with peat moss, sand and mushy swamp soil.I had tons of plants in it that like boggy conditions and they grew like crazy!I may have to build another one......

Okay... You all have lost me! I thought a bog garden with plants was to help keep your water clean...

Where am I?

that's a bog filter. a bog garden is something that can happen naturally like in a swamp, but we're making it where we want it. Stays damp, grows marginals and more. I know Cala will explain it better.

thanks for all the tips. Now I have to find a cheap wading pool at a yard sale :)
