Monika suggested I bring Kyle into this, so, Kyle - are you reading? You've been volunteered to help me. :)
...and, of course, I'd love if others could jump in as well.
The Brugmansia Database has 107 cultivars of Brugs and Daturas, and 65 photos. The problem is that the information is not specific to these kinds of plants, but instead is more generalized. What we want to do is "nail down" a specific group of characterists that Brugs will fall under, and then modify the Brug Database so that these new characteristics are available for people to update their brug entries.
Then, we can search by these characteristics and so forth.
For example, in the Tomatoes Database, we have characteristics like "Fruit Size", "Seed Type", "Fruit Usage" and so forth.
We want this kind of customization for the Brug Database, as well.
Monica had talked about having fields for:
Foliage (Velvet, pubescent, setaceus, glossy, lanceote, toothed, serrated, wavy, etc.)
Height and Spacing (different options for these characteristics that are customized for brugs)
Climate zones
How did the plant originate? (Vegetative or generative part)
Hopefully this is enough of a start to get the ball rolling. In the end, we want to have the Brug Database have all the information that we feel a good Brug Database should have.
Dave
Want to help me with the Brug database?
Dave, How about fragrance, horizontal or pendulous flowers, and trumpet shaped, funnel shaped or tubular shaped flowers?
Just off the top of my head.
Good stuff - keep it coming!
Good/poor mother plant, good/poor pollen donor?

how about a list of initials of names used here. newbies like me do not know what those letters stand for. thanks Dave!

There was some talk about this a while back, but how about a list that crossreferences names? Some plants are sold under more than one name, like Charles Grimaldi/Jutner Orange, and it would be good to know before buying.
Length / Width of flower?
There are good suggestions. You probably have seen this in the file, I send to you, Dave. I will help too,but Kyle has the knowledge about the US - Brugs, he knows almost all of them. His help is needed in this project.
I agree with MsBatt, that it will be a good idea, if we could also ad "synonymous names"
eg.
Charles Grimaldi
syn.: Junters Orange, San Francisco
Ecuador Pink
Syn.: Exotica Pink
etc.
would be useful too, if a category could be added about, which zones will be the best/worst for the flowers ... versicolor for example will be best from zone 4-7 in a GH and sanguinea will be best from zone 4-6(7) and from zone (6)7-8 it needs a cool shady place, - in zone 9-12 it will probably die quickly ...
dave...I can help...but this is my busiest time of year...with my own plants and all the plants at work...so give me some time to get work done first.I can state info for my zone and area ..but others will need to add input also..such as Florida growers have different conditions and results then I do In Iowa. :-)
