I rescued a blue passion vine from the garbage last fall that a hardware store had dug up from its display. I put it in a huge pot and cut it back and brought it inside. It eventually died all the way back, and I expected that. I've read that they grow back from the roots (whatever that means) and watered it a little once a month. I recently transplanted it into the garden due to the warmer weather. I noticed that it had tiny white roots growing from the gigantic roots that were originally on it. I figured it was still alive. It's been 2 months and no sign of any growth around the plant. Does this take a while to happen? Am I wasting garden space with a hopeless case?
passiflora careulae(?):is it coming back?
Arrianna,
I have the P.caerulea vine and have never had it die back like yours did. Since you have it outside now, I'd give it some more time. I see that you live in Ill. and we haven't been having the best sping in the midwest so far. Passifloras, for the most part, like warm weather. Maybe with some heat, it will come back. If not, I guess you aren't out a lot other than your time. If it doesn't make it, and you still want one, let me know and I'll try to get one rooted this summer for you.
Thanks Brugie, but I'm still hoping that the lil' guy pulls through!
Probable waiting on warmer weather. I have one but this is first year so I can't answer for sure. The regular passiflora (maypops) are only now getting out of the ground good here. They do like warm climate.
Yeah, we have maypop here too GRC. In Southern Illinois( please note that southern is capitalized, don't ask why) we have a climate all our own, heck most people feel that it's a seperate state! So passifloras should do well here...but we've been flooded , near frozen and then flooded again this past month. I think I lost my P. foetidia too :(((. I swear it was like 90 degrees when I planted these things and then...WHAMO!! Wet, then cold. Put those together and you've got one rotten passion vine. This was my first year growing these too! Sigh, Brugie, I think I'll take you up on your offer!
Arrianna, I have a foetida that I can root you a start of. I have a question: Are Foetida and Foetide the same plant? I have Foetida, and just got Foetide from Dee. I've looked at them so much, can't really tell if they are the same leaf or not.
I'll have to take cuttings a little later after it start growing. Remind me in a month or so and I'll start working on it. We have had to deal with rotten weather too and are just now getting warm enough for things to grow.
Thanks guys!!! I soooo appreciate this!! My foedtia was a lil' seedling I nursed into a healthy plant all winter long, same with my blue passion vine. It's a real blow to lose them in less than a week :(((
Cala, I think that you're two vines are the same...check the stem, if it's fuzzy they're the goat-scented flower passion vine. The vine got its name foedtia from the word fedidt (spelling?), which means stinky. The flowers supposed have a distinct scent (that's none too pleasent) and the leaves do too when you rub them or disturb them.
arrianna, I have a few that I have rooted. I have to send several out this week that I owe and if I have any left I'll save one for you if yours doesn't come back.. I'll email you by the first of next week and let you know for sure. I'll probable have an extra.
btw why is Southern capatilized?
Jim, you can give her the one I was going to get. so much going on here, I just can't get things caught up. I do appreciate the offer you made though!
Great, you guys. Saved me more mental stress. CRC is really getting a foothold here. I'm sure Arrianna will be tickled and she won't have to wait for me to root one.
GRC,
The southern in Southern Illinois is capitalized since I swear people here think they've secceded from the Union! They talk really Southern, more so than in other southern states. During the civil war, southern IL was fighting for the South, and they're still sour about losing. When I moved here 7 years ago, I went to Southern Illinois University, and I just started capitalizing southern. It really is like a different state, with the way we get funding from our state goverment, i.e. none!
BTW, thanks everybody :))))
tiG I have you one and want you to have it. I am sure I will be able to come up with another one.
thanks Jim!
