Everyone knows that farmers are the most romantic people on the face of the earth and last night, my farmer invited me on a midnight walk in a gentle spring rain.........
right after the phone rang and my mother told us that our heifers were out in her yard and headed for the road! It is a 20 minute trip to Mom and Dad's, and it was a very silent ride over. The heifers were in the road by the time we got there, headed over the hill. Stan speeded around them on the left side and they all turned but one, who ran into the truck and bounced off, still running. They stopped, turned around and headed back the other way where my mother and brother were standing just over the hill. Mark got them turned, Stan got in position to put them over the ditch into a meadow above the pasture that they should have been in. I brought up the western flank and croaked at them regularly ( I have a throat infection) that "there is a person here." Being fastidiuos girls, they wouldn't go through the ditch - it was full of water! So, Mark and Stan drove them towards me and I turned them into a driveway at the top of the hill. They went romping off through the meadow, I got in the truck, couldn't find the emergency brake handle, ended up with the fuse cover in my hand, found the brake, stalled the truck, got it going, turned around in a driveway that I didn't know was there, stalled the truck, got to my mother's and ran out to help put up a funnel fence to drive them back into the pasture. That went pretty well, actually. I went back to the truck, soaking wet and totally hoarse, Mom went in the house and Stan and Mark went off to check the fence. They came back laughing. When they got back to the orchard, our heifers were there, right where they were supposed to be. Stan found the other heifers that we had just spent 45 minutes putting in and they were some belonging to the younger couple that lives down in the valley. Ah, the joys of farming - romance, fresh air, exercise and good deeds all without a fee!
