Daffodils anyone need more?

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

I will have a few hundred excess daffodil bulbs for SASE or trade if anyone is interested. I have contacted a few people already, but am running out of new homes! They are being dug now and for another few days, will need to dry and cure before they can be sent, so looking at about May 20 or 21 when ready.

Hi Lupinelover. I'd be interested in trade or sase. What type are they?

Daffodils are mostly from an unnamed mixture sold as "naturalizing". Boy do they multiply! They start blooming here in Zone 6 in February, and a couple are still hanging on in flower (May). They are every color and combination imaginable: yellow, yellow/white, yellow/orange, white/orange, orange/yellow, white, white/pink, pink/white, etc. About the only ones I know by sight of bulb are the latest to bloom. They are tall, 2-3 blooms per flower stalk, either white or yellow, tiny flowers, double, fragrant. These are my fastest multiplier. Given the number of bulbs and clumps I have, there is no good way for me to track them. I have tried to, by marking, labeling, photos, etc., but it just doesn't work out.

All are incredibly hardy, survive even above ground all winter (we have terrible squirrel problems -- they don't eat the bulbs, they just dig them up and replant them at varying depths all over the neighborhood). Even ones that are partially chewed still thrive.

Hello :) Do you happen to have any daffodil bulbs left? I would love to have some in my gardens too. I can send a SASE or you can look at my trade list. Let me know. This was a wonderful offer you did, I am just sorry that I am just now finding it. Thanks! :)

Daffodil planting tips:

If you want to wait until fall to plant, fine. Just make sure you store them correctly: put them in a PAPER bag instead of the plastic I used for shipping. Keep the dry peat around them to help absorb excess moisture. Put them in a cool place (or at least not outside or in a hot garage or other place). Basement or refrigerator would be great.

If you want to grow them in a climate where winter does not really come, they need to be pre-chilled before planting. Check with a local extension for tips about how to do that best in your area.

If you want to plant them in pots for forcing indoors next spring, use only the bigger bulbs. They will flower next year; the smaller ones probably won't. Make sure you water the pot, then put it in a cold (but not much below freezing) place for at least 3 months. Frig if there is room, otherwise unheated garage, shed, porch, etc.

You can plant them immediately outside, or wait until the fall. I left a fair amount of neck on the bulbs to avoid damaging them. That makes it easier to tell which is the top and bottom, also.

If you want them to quickly multiply, plant them shallowly (no more than 2" of soil covering top of bulb, not necessarily top of neck). They won't flower as soon or often using this method, but they will quickly multiply.

For normal flowering and multiplying, plant with at least 4" of soil on top.

To try to make them grow larger and not multiply as fast but flower more reliably, plant with 8" or more of soil on top. I plant some of mine with 12" of soil on top. They flower beautifully, the bulbs put up multiple flower stalks, and only triple in number in a year, rather than by 6-8 as planted normally. But keep in mind, my soil has abnormally high P levels (almost toxic). I maintain very fertile garden soil, so do not "fertilize" any of my bulbs or perennials, other than soon after planting young plants.

If you have other questions, write me.

Kathy
