Can't wait to see my culebra bloom. I know it is going to be a while. Mine isn't as big as yours is yet, but I'm sure it will get there one day. At least we are getting some much needed rain this morning. My ground should be well watered and ready to accept some brugs next week. Can't wait. I see a lot of other brugs in the picture too. No tags. Do you know what each and every one of them is without marking them?

Pink aurea in the back left, arborea on the left front, aurea yellow type hybrid on front right. I am just using these for seed production though. I have a few odds and end Brugs scattered willy nilly throughout and over a few different yards. I have my Brug beds for my main seed setters as well. Then of course I have a few beds I haven't told myself about, but that I set seeds with on occassion or borrow pollen from. I don't intend on giving out cuttings...primarily into seed setting and pollen gathering mode here right now.

Okay Eric, which species of brug has the largest leaf that would be smooth on the edges? I'm still trying to ID the seeds of yours that were marked Isabella X Pink ? by tiG.

Brugie,
Most of my Isabella seeds were crossed with either pink aurea or Butterfly pollen. I should have kept better notes as to what was what and to whom, but I didn't. What I can tell you is this, Butterfly was my primary pollen donor last year, followed by pink aurea and Rosabella. This year I am making just a few crosses involving candida and versicolor type pollen for friends, but I am primarily only using Butterfly and Rosabella pollen this year again. I will make a few exceptions though and cross Amber Rose and Dr.D pollen to Butterfly and Rosabella. Not to mention I plan on making a lot of Culebra crosses using Culebra as both a pollen donor and a seed setter. As many of you know, I grow at least two of everything I have if I can help it and many times 3-5 of everything if I am going to be breeding with it extensively. In this way, I can put one type of pollen on one tree and another type of pollen on another tree as I have multiples of everything. I plan on making a few Shredded white x Culebra crosses as well. Just call me strange. At any rate, many of these crosses will be made available.

I don't think you are strange at all for trying to make the various crosses. We never know what might happen without trying something. Next question is this: When this plant blooms, if I take a picture of the flower from different angles and the leaves and one overall plant picture, can you come close to IDing what Isabella might have been crossed with? I don't see how I can use this plant for hybridiizing without know what she is. Guess I can always say parent unknown. I know this sounds like I'm really stupid when it comes to brugs, but I can't learn unless I ask these stupid questions. I do have your Isabella X Butterfly for sure, but don't know if it will be big enough to bloom this year. Seeds were very slow about germinating.

Thanks Eric, for your help.

I wouldn't ever consider hybridizing with a Brug simply because it was a known or named Brugmansia or for that matter of known parentage. My criteria for selecting for a breeding plant...first and foremost, growth characteristics, bloom color, size, shape, etc. I can assure you if I had a seed germinate out of place and it came up as a red aurea I would use it no matter if I knew the parentage or not. I guess what I am saying is this. Don't worry about the fact that you only know one of the parents. Thats not as important as how much you like the seedling. I only keep 1-2 out of each cross to work with and some crosses I toss all of the seedlings.

Okay, I just thought both parents had to be known. That makes it a lot easier since I have other unknowns. Thanks Eric. Appreciate the help.

Brugie,
Knowing the parentage on both sides most certainly helps, but one must still pick the best of the litter so to speak no matter what the parentage. Think how little one knows about a wild hybrid. One does not even know one parent much less both parents. And yet, we still hybridize with them if they look promising. Who knows who Rothkirch's parents are?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

So true!! I have a couple of really strong plants here so I sure hope I like the blooms and fragrance too. Can only imagine what the Isabella X Butterfly will look like. I'm sure if it has color, I'll like it. Since I don't know of the backgrounds of these plants, could I be looking at possibly a white flower here? If that does happen, I think I would just keep crossing back until I get color. Maybe do a cull job as another option. :-)

Brugie,
Yes, we don't even know what Isabella's back ground is. Some speculate it is a wild hybrid.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I didn't quite understand Don Martinson's post today about Golfito and Isabella. I took it that he thinks they might be two different plants. What do you think?

FSH, TX

Brugie,
If you obtain two of them and they cross and produce seeds then they are different genetically. If they don't cross then they are the same. I no longer grow Isabella and I don't plan on growing Golfito so I can't answer that for you. I can tell you that enough of you have cuttings of my Isabella's that someone should be able to do this. I dread to think of how many have seeds from my Isabella's alone....Too many have them I am sure. Hopefully someone will come up with something trully special or at least something worth working with further. I know I even sent out some Dr.D, DXS m seeds and a few others like Butterfly x Rosabella seeds and vice versa type crosses were given out last year as well.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Time will tell.......When I get them both, I plan to do just that. Later....

Shirley, I appreciate your idea to cross these two very much *lol* Eventually we will know :-)

Will you let me know, when you have the plants and are ready to coss? Exciting!!! *lol* :-)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sure Tonny. Will have to see if my Isabella is going to make it. I do have a great gardening friend who is sending me a Golfito. Time will tell, but if I make it to the point of cross pollinating, I'll let you know.

Shirley, If you need another Isabella just let me know.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Snow, I really don't think mine is going to make it. It hasn't grown all winter and is only bout 3-4 inches tall at most. Save one for me, if you would. I'd really appreciate it.
