I finally picked the pod cause it started turning brown & soft.Split it open ,pulled out the seeds. Not too many of them and there was one very large black one in there.I put them on a paper towel to dry overnite.I got up this morning to go to work and ....the seeds are gone! Not all of them ,just the large ones that had a good chance of making it.All that was left is the tiny, minute, insignificant, unripened seeds.Which one of you guys came up here and stole them???I thought my DH had hid them as a joke.Nope!I don't know if one of my birds got them, the Macaw was out in a different room when I got up,I thought her wings flapping may have made the seeds fly on the floor but they're not there.Unless she ate them.My other thoughts are mice or ants.....are they going to hulucinate now???8 months I waited for that pod to ripen.....my life su*ks
OK who stole the seeds???
CC, I'll bet you had a mouse. Maybe it will kill him if he ate them. That is too bad. All that waiting and no seeds to plant. I don't think it would be ants unless you have some hybrid kind that can carry a big seed. Next time will be better for you. Hang in there. I know it is a disappointment, but we do get through them. Better put a trap where you had the seeds. If it was a mouse, he will come back for more.
oh Karyn!!!!!! so sorry :(
CC - can I send you some seeds?? I know I didn't take them but brugcrazy has been strangely silent lately. Maybe it's guilt~~
CC, that's terrible. What a dissappointment after waiting all that time. I had a mouse decide to store thistle seeds in my $40.00 White Bat Plant last winter. I found a hole in the potting soil and the roots on the floor where he had dug them out. Needless to say the plant didn't make it and neither did the mouse.
CC, my cockatoo escaped from his cage(he has a very strong beak and pried the cage apart) and ate the "seed" part of the brug seeds I had on the table. He ate several. He peeled them like an expert, ate the bean part and tossed the husk. It didn't hurt him. I was so worried. He left the "teeny" empty seeds laying there, guess he could tell which ones were good!!
PS, I just harvested a really ripe CG that I can share with you.
Thanks you guys,I didn't vacume till yesterday 'cause I wanted to see if they were just on the carpet but they wern't.I'm just bummed cause I waited sooooooo long for that pod,I know I have more later,so no one needs to send me any seeds. But thanks so much for offering! If Areil (the macaw) ate them she didn't show any signs of it.Plus shes so messy she would have left peices of it all over and shredded the paper towel. My guess is mice, living on a farm ,we always have some, plus they have a buffet under Ariels perch,LOL
CC,I have some fresh Dr Suess x Frosty Pink if you want to try them.
Cala, you may have hit on something there. If we can train your bird to peel our seeds and not eat them. Well, think of how much easier life would be. I don't bother peeling mine as it takes so long, but a trained bird...heh, he could make life easy sure enough.
Gone2seed, I see you are trying Dr.Suess X Frosty Pink...if you get anything spectacular let me know. I can tell you that most of my crosses from that cross were white, but they were also highly fertile. I checked on a Frosty Pink further south and I had about 7 seedpods started on it. Just 3-4 on my Pink Candida...and a single seedpod on my Ecuador pink. Guess I need to pay the moths more. On a side note, I did get to pollinate some more Candida species with Ecuador pink pollen this weekend. Citronella was crossed to Butterfly...Whiskers x Butterfly, and a few other Butterfly crosses. As I think about it....Citronella x Butterfly is going to be one of my favorites for overall shape...I hope. I still can't think of any hybrid I like better than Citronella for its overall shape and growth characteristics. IF only its tendrils were as long as Butterfly's or Whiskers and of course in a nice pink or peach....I have decided to cull my HG's by the way. Guess I'll have to post some pictures of them laying in the trash dump later. Live and learn as they say.
ok, yikes!!!!!!!!!!! you'll give folks heart attacks!!!!!!! i don't think i'll get a chance to cull double peach, only got one to root and it goes to CC.....the other one might make it. sounds like you've made some great crosses there. are you culling HG because it doesn't set seeds, doesn't bloom well, or?????? inquiring minds want to know.... betcha you might make a good trade out of HG, brugman, if you have the time.
Arlene,
I don't really have the time to trade right now. I have 2 large HG's and several smaller ones. Just going to compost them as they keep dropping buds and they seem largely infertile to me. Not worth having in my oppinion even in the hopes of getting a single seedpod out of it. I was thinking perhaps if one could cross it to something a bit more fertile or with better bloom characteristics....but I just don't want that one being a part of my breeding program. I'd rather create a double pink using Candida species x Ecuador pink or Candida species x Candida pink for that matter.
do you have time to package them up for postage?? if so I'm ready!
if you like i'll gather the possee and run a rescue mission, if you aren't up for that i understand. i don't know how you do it all, work, family and all those brugs.
gone 2 seed, thanks for the offer,I have some of that cross planted and growing,Actually running out of room now.The GH STILL is not up,I'm trying to get everything right the first time so I don't screw it up.....LOL.....Eric,hate to see the lawn mower get the HH,I'd be happy to see one blooming!Arlene,Tig,SAVE THE HH BRUGS!!!!
