Help with my Canna plants

Plymouth, PA(Zone 5b)

I received 2 beautiful canna's this week. They were in beautiful shape and the leaves were green & red no brown spots at all. I planted them, watered them and now I notice the leaves are turn brown and drying out, even though the plant has water. What am I doing wrong or is this normal for newly planted plants?
thanks

Very common for transplanted Canna. The leaf, I'm sure was left on for you to see how your canna will look when it's grown. Transplanted rhizomes suffer transplant shock too!

I have another question about the cannas - how in the world do you keep the leaves from getting eaten up with something? I used slug killer, but still these leaves look really terrible - beautiful flower, but the leaves are a mess. Roz

Slugs, aphids, thrips, leafrollers,.....oh how they love the Canna Foilage!! If you want to take the organic route on this, then you have to first do this. Surround your Cannas with small, crushed rocks, and if possible, copper edging. Slugs will not go over anything rough or abrasive. You can also use beer or a yeast concoction as a bait, planted at ground level. In the evening spray your canna with a mixture of 3 Tbsps. dry aluminum sulphate, dissolved in a gallon of hot water. Spray surrounding areas and plants.

Also several times a week spray with the following tonic from Jerry Baker.

Garden Cure All Tonic

4 cloves garlic
1 small onion
1 small jalapeno pepper
1 tsp. Murphys Oil soap
1 tsp. vegetable oil
Warm water

Grind garlic, pepper, and onion in a blender or food processer until well ground. Steep this mixture in a quart of warm water fr 2 hours. Strain the mixture, and dilute liquid with 3 parts warm water. Add Murphy's Oil soap and vegetable oil. Mist spray plants.

This should help you to have some hap0py campers! Good Luck!
