I've not much to do these days except water seedlings. Last week I did more Stephanotis, camellias and some azaleas.
Today I found 6 new varieties of African Violets reduced to half price. Most of the flowers were spent so took about 50 leaf cuttings and propagated them in a flat. I also bought 3 gorgeous Gloxinias and did the same.
What tropical plants are you propagating now?
Joydie
What tropicals are you propagating now?
I'm doing tropical hibiscus and allamandas(2 kinds)plus some new oleander cuttings,...... :-)
What allamandas do you have? I'm getting ready to toss Chocolate Cherry and Chocolate Cream. Do you want some of the green wood?
save me a piece of that Shirley!!
I planned on rooting some of the green wood, but have to toss the mother plants. Just take up too much room and I'd rather have a new plant anyway. I'll get some rooted for you, in fact, I still have one marked Chocolate Cherry that is already rooted and potted. I want to start one for a friend in the KC area too.
Shirley,NO! don't toss them.I'll send you postage money to send me some cutting!
CC you can have cuttings or I can try to root them for you. Your choice.
Brugie if you want to part with the stock plants I can use them..I Can even come pick them up...the cuttings you can use or share..I have time to let the adults grow back. :-)
You have mail.....
This is wonderful to have people share surplus...I'll trade rooted stehanotis for any rooted tropicals...
Kyle,
would you like to trade a couple of your hibiscus when they are rooted for some stehanotis? let me know and thanks.
Joydie
Joydie, thanks for the offer of the stephanotis, but I already have one. If I have any of this material left over, you are welcome to it if you want it.
S.
Brugie,
I would love a couple of stems of each to try to root..here's hoping you have 4 pieces...(fingers crossed)
Joydie
Joydie, I don't think I'll have that much left. I've got to root some for a friend, myself, and 2 traders too. I don't know if it would be worth what it would cost you to get it to Canada for a small piece or two. The last time I mailed a box to Canada, it was 2 lbs. and cost me over eleven bucks. I'm assuming a one pound would be around six bucks, but I don't know for sure. Send me an email with your address and I'll check at our PO on Monday for the charges and then let you know. I should know by then how much plant will be left. Been kind of lazy today and didn't get it cut up.

I have made some mistakes and am having a real problem with aphids on my vines. This was my first
year trying to grow tropical vines from seed and it has been a real experience., Now I am trying to learn to propage from cuttings. If anyone has any vine cuttings they would like to contribule for me to learn on, I would be happy to trade or send postage.
Thanks Patricia
Patricia,
I never had problems with insects before until this year...so far I had a blight of whitefly worse than an infestation of locus...lol. I got them under control and then came the fungus gnats..still working on them. They need some serious birth control instruction...lol. Now I found spider mites on my citrus plants and I'm dealing with that.
I never had insects until I started with the brugmansia cuttings...the insects showed up shortly after that. From now on I'm going to keep new trades isolated until I'm absolutely sure they are not infested.
Growing from seed is a learning experience of trial and error especially when you have to do it indoors over thewinter with supplemental light sources. As for propagating cuttings I suggest you take cuttings from shrubs and things you have in your garden and practise. That's how I started. Some succeed and others bite the dust but its all about trial and error until you understand how each plant is best propagated. Its always a life long learning process and consider it to be fun and don't take it too serious or you will get disappointed.

Joyce, I'm wondering if our problems with bugs this year come from the mild winter we have all had. I've never had problems with white files and aphids before. In fact, I've never had an aphid before. Always have some spider mites, but was surprised to see them show up months after bringing the brugs into the house. Where do they come from? Our local greenhouse said that they have had a horrible time with bugs this year and that is it because we haven't had the long period of very cold weather to kill everything that is out there crawling and flying around. Even though I enjoyed the winter, I'll vote for some cold weather this next winter. Anything if it will help with the bug problem. Oh, yes, I had the fungus knats too.
We actually had a colder than normal winter. But
I also started growing brugs from cuttings this winter.
Have any of you tried the Golds worm castings around your Brugs . for white flies. If so, how do you think it works. When I first put it around mine, the white flies disappeared overnight. But then today, I see that they
are back. That was only one week from one worm casting appication to the next.
I'm convinced that the eggs are actually on the stems of brugs just waiting for a nice warm location in order to hatch. I had rare Jamaican pumpkin plants growing indoors and they were just starting to flower. The next thing I knew they went limp overnight. I checked and the leaves were completely comvered with whiteflies. I killed most of them by hand and a few days later there were a ton of them back again...so the poor plants got sprayed with a soapy solution. I'm glad there are now more seeds sprouting or I wouldn't have any of these pumpkins this year.
I'm at the stage where the bug spray is going to come out soon. I already replanted all the brugs once and sterilized the soil in the oven. I also stripped all the leaves back in January. That set the plants back tremendously. If its mild tomorrow everything is going outdoors and I'm spraying the entire house from top to bottom. I can't stand the fungus gnats anymore!!!
I've not tried the worm castings on the soil. The trick is to catch the darn eggs that are in the soil.
