April 17th

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

Can't be April 17th already!!! The time will really fly for you folks that are moving to new digs with all your animals and everything else in tow.
Boy, I've been busy. Got a call the other night from a guy that has seen us buy some bottle calves at the auctions. He had a very young heifer that calved. The Mom had no milk, She really loved her little girl, but couldn't feed her. We bought her and is she ever a cutey! A tiny thing, but her long legs make you think she will grow well. She seems really healthy. So another bottle baby. Then finally my two old cows had their calves. They had them hidden well. My old hereford had a beautiful heifer and the little red cow (whom I assume is shorthorn) had a bull calf. The shorthorn doesn't like me too close to her baby. She immediately moves him to another pasture. He is all legs and almost stumbles over himself. I probably told you about the red cow earlier this spring. My husband bought her at an auction. When he got her home she was foaming at the mouth and actually bent the metal corral gate when he unloaded her. I almost had hubby load her right back up and take her back. She was half starved looking as well. I kept her up in the corral for a week or so and then let her out into a bigger lot. Almost have her eating out of my hand now. She has fattened up and almost glistens in the sun.
Jewel, time to wean lambs here as well. How is your little calf?
Have a great day!!
