It's open....does it look like an Arborea is suppose to look?

Beautiful flower Glory. I have learned my lesson though on those arborea flowers. Have to wait till I have grown a few more. Have you pollinated it yet and if so are you putting any of your Jessie Noel or such type pollen on it?

Yes!!! :)
This is an arborea :) Beautiful flower ... Do you like its fragrance?

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Pretty, very pretty.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, it is pretty indeed. I am so glad for you that Tonny agrees that it is an arborea. Becca Lynn would be an interesting cross. I love the size and shape of her leaves.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

That is a real beauty, Glory!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Very nice Gloria. Love the long tendrils.

Guess I'll have to save the pollen till one of the Jessie Noels bloom....there is about 4 more buds on this small plant.

I'll be sure to smell it tonight....that's if I can stay awake after dark....Jet Lag is killing me. LOL

Well, if y'all are sure this is an Arborea we'll have lots of cuttings this fall.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

a real beauty!!!!!

I pollinated this flower with pollen from Whiskers....I'll keep y'all updated....put the pollen from the Arborea in the freezer.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Glory, you know it isn't supposed to be possible to cross arborea but with flava, sangs, and other arboreas i think? isn't that right? but who knows, maybe the southern heat will alter the pollen.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I love it and hope it crosses with SOMETHING!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I may be all wet here, but I thought Arboreas were self pollinating and when crossed with a sang, you get a flava. Guess instead of guessing I should go look at the book.
:-)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Is Arboreas the only one you can cross to a Sang besides flava? Wondering as I should have a flower on my Sang before long. I should have something in the GH to pollinate it with.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Glory, It's an absolutely beautiful flower. Whiskers cross should produce something awesome.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Snow, you can cross a sang to a sang too. I don't know if you can use flowers from the same plant though. I guess to me if it is self-pollinating, that would mean that one plant would produce seeds by self pollination. I guess I'm going to have to go look at that book again. :-)

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Sanguinea will cross with b.arborea, b.flava, and b.vulcanicola

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I just read that on an arborea, because it is self fertile, the five staments have to be removed before the flower opens or the result will be seed of a B. arborea that is identical.

Snow, a sang. will cross with a sang. Still haven't found if it has to be a different plant though. Takes 8 months for the pod to ripen. Bring on the new skin!!

Glory, absolutely beautiful. If you pollinate the arborea with some sanguinea pollen, You can make a Mississippi Flava. Arborea + Sanguinea = Flava.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

That's good news Shirley. I do have four other Sangs. Now I just have to see if another one might be Y'ing and I'll be in business.LOL

If the sanguineas are cuttings from different plants, they should cross. If the seeds all came from the same plant, they may cross, not positive about that. Pods take 8 months to ripen, kinda like having a baby. DH knocked the pods off of my peach one when they were little. I've put them out as it's too hot in the GH for them to bloom right now. All the buds dry up. Should have lots of buds soon. :)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

The Sangs are from seeds that I received. If the flowers come out on two of them I'll give it a try.It got to 90 here today and the GH got quite hot even with the door, windows and fan going.I'll check tomorrow and see if I still have buds. Wishing you lots of luck with yours Jeanne.

The fragrance reminds me of "Cotton Candy".

Arlene,
What you describe as impossible has already been done by Monika. Yes, I realize its common consensus...but remember it wasn't too long ago that it was supposed to be impossible to fly. Lets go to the moon with this one.
Here's a picture of that cross from Monika.

i had obviously missed your linked post, was reading from the book. i hope someone is working on a heat tolerant vulcanicola, sang, etc.

FSH, TX

Arlene,
Many people are currently working on heat tolerant sanguinea's, vulcanicola's, flava's and arborea x vulcanicola type hybrids. I think the trick with those might be to start a few thousand seeds of say sanguinea x arborea or arborea x sanguinea and kill off all but the strongest earliest bloomer/s. Do the same with arborea x vulcanicola and then perhaps one could breed the two seedlings together or something similar. Of course I just want a hardy arborea x flava x (arborea x vulcanicola) or something similar. Perhaps crossed to aurea at a later date....
