any type of berry plant that i can make jellies from.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Janet, do you have dewberries? I can send lots of vines, although they are blooming now so you wouldn't get berries until next year. I also have agarita bushes. Not a berry, and the leaves are pointed and stick like American holly, but the tiny fruits make a unique jelly. I can also send my sister a request to send native blackberries from Louisiana. They will bloom and fruit later than dewberries, aren't quite as full flavored but make scrumptious jam and jellies, as well as cobblers. Let me know if you are interested.

aimee are dewberries the upright plants? if so I have them. lmk

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

No, they crawl all over the ground and any other plants nearby, having a definite viny characteristic. Blackberries are the ones with the thicker canes and growing more as a shrub. They produce later than dewberries.

Hey Janet, how about chokecherries? I have 2 that need a good home (they just don't do well here in the Bay Area) and I'd be happy to send them when I can dig again. (I tweaked my back with too much vigorous weeding, so I'm moving really s l o w for a while). Let me know if you'd like these guys. Thanks!

troy you have mail

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Janet, got your email, and can do! I will talk to my sister in La. and arrange for her to send you some starts. I will let you know when and how and what to expect. She will know the best way to move them. How many do you want? You can espalier these or train them on fences or other supports. I think they look especially neat espaliered, with the berries for accents when they ripen. I think it will need to be done immediately, as early spring is the time to move these bush types. I haven't seen the land for several years, so am not sure about the accessibility since logging, but I'm sure one of both of us have plenty she can get starts from. And your passifloras arrived, thank you so very much. Now about those beans, may I know more? You did a marvelous job of packaging the vines, by the way. They looked fresh and spry when I pulled them out. Planted them and am waiting to enjoy fruits. Thanks again.

Janet, just wanted to add that if you get the agarita bushes from Aimee, they DO make a heavenly jelly! Grandma Wall put them in a pan with an inch or so of water, just enough to get them boiling, then strain the juice and add 1 part sugar to 2 parts juice and the pectin. YUMMY!

And the best way to harvest them is, when they are VERY ripe (bright red and sweet), lay an old sheet or two under the bush all the way around and beat the bush with a stick so the berries fall on your sheets. I take a stick in each hand, hold one branch outwards by pushing on the base with one stick and beat it with the other so the berries fall out and on the sheet instead of in the crown of the bush. You'll have a few leaves so will have to "waller" the berries around in the sheet until the leaves gather at the top and edges. I've thought about going out there now to knock off the leaves dead from winter so there's not so many later (it's an evergreen bush, but over the course of the year, some leaves do die of natural causes ;-). All this isn't really that hard (easier than picking dewberries by hand!) and is SO worth it when you taste that jelly! Mmmmm-MMMM!
