How tall do brugs get before

Plymouth, PA(Zone 5b)

They get the Y for blooming? I got a cutting last fall and babied it through winter. Its now about 20" tall and I was wondering when you should start to see the Y.
thanks

tamlamb they usually have to get 5-6 feet tall before blooming.

I just bought one about 3 ft tall and it is blooming and has lots of bloomers coming out and should bloom again soon!

Hope this helps!

Well - yes and no. I have cuttings that were taken from the flowering region in fall that are blooming now at maybe a foot and a half. I have cuttings taken at the same time from the trunk - I don't expect to see anything happen this year. Seed - I'm not expecting anything but some people say they have bloom in a year.
If it's any consolation - a brug can easily put on 5-6 feet in a year with lots of water and food.
The book says exactly what Eclipse said - 5-6 feet - and they're the experts.

I think Tamlamb was asking when to expect to see the "Y" and wondering if that is when it will bloom!

As I am not an expert and a beginner brug grower... I just thought I would tell her about my new brug and how it is only 3 ft tall with a "Y" and is blooming and also I may add that I have lots of neighbors that have brugs that totally neglect their brugs and they just grow and bloom beautifully for them...

I have pampered mine and pampered them and to no avail and I am just going to let them be and see how they do this year on their own!

Happy Bruging to all!

Imaseedpicker,
Some Brugs just take a while to start blooming. Herrenhauser Garten is one of those. If memory serves me I believe Monika and another hybridizer threw Herrenhauser away because it didn't bloom that prolificly.

Being I live in a cold climate I had no choice but to pamper the heck out of them. Misting, Watering, fertilizing and growing them under lights all winter gave me a jump start on the blooming.I'm sure if they weren't spoiled rotten I wouldn't have a one bloom now and probably wouldn't have ANY till late summer. There would be no chance of having a seed pod mature if I hadn't grown them like this. And I want a seed pod!!!!!

One other thing I should note, the HG I grew in a pot bloomed earlier and stayed smaller than the HG that I grew in the ground. Both were started at the same time.

I often have a 6" cutting, planted in the ground in May, make a 6 FOOT tree by August! I don't know what they might do in a year, if I could leave them outside that long. Mine usually start blooming in late June and continue until frost. Of course, until this year, all I've been growing is Frosty Pink and an unnamed white, so maybe they're atypical.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

It depends on where the cutting comes from maybe. my first cutting was about 8-10 inches tall, the guy said it would probably bloom in a month or two and it did.

Thanks for all the info from you nice gardening friends...I am a very impatient person and LOL I took up gardening!

I hope all this info helps Tamlamb and others too!

Happy Gardening!

Some aurea`s take 1½-2 year to get to the Y and I believe it was Monika, who said, that some of these reach more than 2 m in height, before blooming.

My wild aurea, however started in 1½-1.8 m height and Ida in about 1½ m.

I heard of some, that bloomed 6-7 months from seeds.

It is fast and good going ... lets see some more of them ... makes hybridizing faster *lol* but could of cause lessen the excitement during the time of results :)
