Hi!
I have gathered up a 1 gallon strawberry pot, with four holes on the sides, and one on top (of course). I plan to grow these in a mostly sunny spot outside on my apartment roof.
I've also puchased a few herb plants (chives and chamomile), and grown a few from seed (marjoram, basil, oregano, and parsley). I'm nearly ready to fill the pot.
But there's one problem - the oregano is significantly behind the rest of the herbs. I was hoping to put marjoram, basil, parsley, and oregano in the 'holes', and put the chives and chamomile on top. (will this work? or should I do something different?) Should I wait to fill the pot until the oregano catches up? leave a hole and fill it later? Or, bigger yet, change what I put where in the pot? While I have had experience with some of those herbs growing happily indoors (at least for the summer), I have no luck keeping chamomile indoors (this means the chamomile will have to be in that pot somehow).
I also purchased lemon balm, but later found out it is invasive, and so I have decided to keep it indoors next to my 2 year old spearmint and a new chocolate mint.
Thank you in advance for your help,
-Jennifer
Strawberry pot contents ...
Were I doing the same thing (I have a similar size strawberry pot which is replanted every year) I would plant the oregano in one of the upper holes, reason being that these pots are hard to water and it tends to run out of the first available holes.
A tip (you may already know) I saw on TV which works for these pots is place a long tube of cardboard in the centre of the pot. Fill in the soil around it and then fill the tube with gravel. Pull out the cardboard tube. When you water the pot water into the gravel so the water gets to all areas. It works.
Baa I have done that same tip and yes it works great but i put in a saoker hose piece.

Great tip and no fiddling about with gravel too
I saw it on Rebecca's garden a few years back.
Thanks all... any and all additional advice is still welcome. :)

Try putting in pvc pipe. Drill holes up and down the pipe. Insert the pipe into the middle of the jar. Then water is easily spread out to all areas.
