Hot Dry Location

I could use some suggestions for the 1-1/2' wide strip between my concrete patio and Deck. There are overgrown Forsythia there now, and they will come out after they bloom. They are way too big, and when I prune hard they don't bloom, so out they come. I didn't think too much when I put them there 16 years ago, and they were just little starts! Now any suggestions on what I can put in that strip, it gets really hot there, (it faces south) It has a green lattice background, looking for something perennial if possible, and a long season interest, or better yet a combo of two or three to make the long haul look nice. My gardens are pretty much cottage type. No particular restrictions other than the environment. Thanks L.
