Is a leaf that is smooth or toothed indicative of whether or not a plant has mostly veriscolor, aurea, suaveolens, candida etc. genes in it. I guess what I am trying to find out is whether or not you can look at a leaf and determine what the genes of the plant is. If so, please post what plants have what leaves. This would be very informative for me.
Shape of Leaf Question
Brugnanny...many kinds have serrated leaves and many types have smooth(untoothed) leaves. Some have fuzzy (pubescent) leaves..some have semiglossy leaves. The leaves can help determine varieties only if the flower color and type is known. Versicolors never have toothed leaves in my experience.Suaveolens, aureas, and candidas tend to have toothed leaves..hybrids of any of the brug species can change the edges of the leaves. So as to your question... can you tell genetics just by the leaves..the answer is no.It helps ,but can't 100% confirm heritage. :-)
Thanks Kyle for taking the time to answer my question. You explanation did help to clarify this for me. I know that I will learn a lot this year as I watch my little ones grow up. I have all different types and sizes of leaves and when they bloom I hope that I will be able to identify the hybrid characteristics of the bloom and leaf and that the pieces of the puzzles come together for me. I know that for a person of your knowledge . . this comes easy to you. I am on the learning tract and it will take me a while.

We're all on the learning tract BrugNanny.Isn't it great that we've got the best teachers right here.
Yes Snow . . . We are very fortunate to have the best teachers right here and that they are so willing to share their knowledge with us. I have so many notes and printouts that one would surely believe that I was back in school. I purchased 3 large 3-ring binders and dividers and I have almost every thing in the section that it belongs in so that I can reference easily. Whew! this has really kept me busy along with caring for the seedlings and plants, grandkids, DH, and it seems that I have almost forgotten about the house. . . it does not get all the attention it use to. And the washing - - Oh, I must do that tomorrow if I want something to wear outside next week!
