Absolutely marvelous Hibiscus. I am definately going to get one this year! How do you winter it over? in greenhouse? take cuttings, seeds? How long do those gorgeous flowers last? full sun?

thanks for posting, it is truly a magnificent looking plant!

I love this plant, have had it for four yrs.

They are a bunch of little cuttings, as many as you want to root to fill the hanging basket. I bring inside and hang on planter pole, close to window, then spring take as many cuttings as you can, put in glass of water, light, root in couple days, keep planting as many as you want and need.

Can be full sun, until it starts getting too hot, starts to burn leaves, then partial shade.

I have seen one at trader Joes for 10 bucks, I think I will go get it today.

Hello Hibiscus,

Just happened to upload one to the dbase a couple of days ago under 'Acalypha reptans'. It really is a most attractive basket subject. Grown here in the UK in the tropical glasshouse.

Hibiscus, I went out last night and bought this plant, brought it home and took cuttings, put them in water. How long for roots to form? and will they bush out if I take cuttings?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Couple days to root, yes, each time you clip, forms bushier plant.
I keep taking new cuttings until I get enough for a large hanging basket full and give some away, potted.
Thanks for your interest, pebble, hope you enjoy it as much as I, and my trading friends have.

Excellent picture Peter, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Hibiscus for all the invaluable information on this.
I have enjoyed both your picture and Peter's picture. I am looking forward to growing this. Hibiscus, when do you put it outside? I have it sitting inside for now.

As soon as real chance of frost is over. Take it in if getting down to 30's. It should be getting SPRING soon!! I sure hope so, I have flowers everywhere!!!

I am so excited, and the best part is, that the cat isn't trying to devour it. He usually eats all my plants, so this is very good for me, I am going to take another batch of cuttings pretty soon. I just love this plant!
I think I will take it outside for a couple of hours today.

Just thought I'd give you a little update on my fiasco. Seems I'm always in one little fiasco or another.
Thank God I took those cuttings....becuase I put the plant outside, and it died. it was a very sad sight. I got over it, and just last night, made another planter with the cuttings, I added some blue lobelia to it too though, cause it was kinda spindly....
I went back to Trader joe's and they didnt have any more of this plant, i would have gotten another one....

What happened to it when you put it outside? Mine is outside, but we are having lots of rain, so bring in under patio roof so it doesn't stay too wet and rot, won't do that later in summer, we have little rain then.

Sounds like your water is ok to root fuschias also??

Hib, I had to toss my mother plant, it was beyond salvation.... it was deader than a doornail. Luckily I had taken those cuttings....
NotMartha, you paid a hefty price, I guess you didnt get it at trader joe's..... Be sure you take plenty of cuttings to winter over, if I recall correctly hibiscus winters hers over. otherwise they are annuals, I think.

I bring mine inside and have hanging basket on planter pole, lots of hooks for hanging plants, then I take new cuttings as soon as it starts getting too leggy. Not too much heat(sun), ok until it gets real hot. Regular watering, not too wet! Hope this helps, Dori.

I had one a couple of years ago and then a bird built a nest in it so was unable to water it and ended up drying out and died. Also had a purple passion plant that a bird did the same thing; both in hanging baskets. Lost the plants but had the pleasure of seeing new babies up close.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

wow coco, that's pretty neat. sorry your plant died. what can you do though? I guess watering would drown the babies...

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Had a cardinal do that, and I told her that if she wanted to build a nest there, she better get used to a daily bath. Well, she persisted, and one day I looked to see 4 little eggs in the nest. I knew not to touch it......she was watching me from the tree and just a squacking...I said , "Now sweetheart, why did you persist so??" Next morning, she was gone .........nest, eggs, and all!! True story.......this was in a huge fern none the less. I moved all the flowering baskets because this is her favorite habit, and I knew the cat would find her. But the fern didn't daunt her one iota!!
